Antonio Skármeta nació en Antofagasta (Chile) y se graduó en Filosofía y Literatura en la Universidad de Chile y en la de Columbia, en Nueva York. Sus novelas y libros de cuentos han sido traducidos a veinticinco idiomas. Algunos de ellos, reeditados permanentemente, figuran entre los clásicos de la literatura contemporánea. Su novela El cartero de Neruda alcanzó éxito mundial, y la película basada en ella obtuvo cinco nominaciones a los Oscar y el entusiasmo de lectores y espectadores.

Ha sido distinguido por el gobierno de Francia como Caballero de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras. Italia le concedió el título de Comendador y Alemania la Medalla Goethe. Sus obras han obtenido algunos de los más prestigiosos premios internacionales: La boda del poeta tuvo el Prix Médicis en Francia y el Grinzane Cavour en Italia; La chica del trombón recibió el Elsa Morante, y No pasó nada, el Boccaccio Internacional. Su álbum La composición, con dibujos de Alfonso Ruano, coronó sus éxitos con el Premio Mundial de Literatura Infantil de la UNESCO. Su última novela, El baile de la Victoria, ha sido galardonada con el Premio Planeta 2003. Fue embajador de Chile en Alemania de 2000 a 2003 y hoy vive en su país dedicado sólo a la literatura.
