Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jennie DeGenaro
The Dream Stars Talent Show is a chance for the winning high school band to make a CD to play on local radio stations. Lance Crane, leader of his band Elite, asks Jools, a nerd, to join his band. Jools is happy and does not realize Lance is playing a hateful joke on him. Cass, a nerd, hears Lance and his friends laughing at Jools. She asks Jools to be in a band with her. Cass finds other unpopular kids to play in the band. They name their band Nervous because they are. Cass can really sing and rap. The auditorium is full, but when Jools tries to play, his keyboard is dead. Someone switched off the power. When Cass tries to sing, her mike is off. Jools plugs in the power and Nervous shows great talent. But Elite seems better, with the vocalists sounding like real pop stars. But when Jools removes the backing track, they discover the band is weak and that the girls are lip-synching. The Elites are jeered off the stage and Nervous is the winner. The glossary explains words some readers may not know. There are discussion questions, writing prompts, and Internet sites. Several other books by this publisher also encourage good sportsmanship and fair play. Schools will welcome this book in their libraries.
