About the Author

John Hansen is Professor Emeritus, a recent past-Chair for Medical Education in Neurobiology and Anatomy, and Associate Dean for Admissions at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Hansen was awarded the first annual Presidential Diversity Award by the University of Rochester in recognition of his 24 years of commitment and dedicated efforts to increase the recruitment, retention and graduation of medical school candidates from diverse backgrounds.

Dr. Hansen, researches peripheral and central dopaminergic systems, neural plasticity and neural inflammation. He is a recipient of an NIH Research Career Development Award and has received numerous teaching awards including Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award given annually by the AAMC to nationally recognized medical educators.

Professor Hansen is author of over 110 research publications, book chapters, and books. He has been Co-editor of the journal Clinical Anatomy and the lead consulting editor of Netter’s Atlas of Human Anatomy (2-7th editions). He continues to author Netter’s Anatomy Flash Cards, Netter’s Clinical Anatomy and Netter's Anatomy Coloring Book.

Description: This box of anatomy flashcards is arranged by body regions with an image with numbered labels on one side and answers on the reverse side. In addition to the identification of the numbered structures, the reverse side notes the clinical relationship and has a large comment section. This edition includes access to a digital version.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a self-assessment tool for students of anatomy, not only for structures in a dissection but all the pertinent information about that structure. The cards are sequenced with the regions of Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy, 7th edition (Elsevier, 2019). The digital version reproduces the cards with the ability to click each label to reveal the answer and includes a series of multiple-choice questions. Students love self-assessment resources, and flashcards, both print and electronic, have proven to be good sellers.
Audience: Flashcards are most commonly used by students at all levels. They either like them or they don't, dependent on their learning preference. They sell well and this keeps them in revision. These do meet the needs of the intended audience, with the caveat that not all students use flashcards for study. This version has been color-coded for easy identification of the region of the body they represent. They are hole punched for an enclosed ring to help keep them in some sort of order.
Features: This series of cards presents the images from the atlas, as well as some new ones, and test a reasonable number of structures per card (unlike the labels in the print atlas which are numerous). The box they come in is sturdy and will last, which is important as it houses the cards that students do not put on the ring as they move from region to region in their study of the body.
Assessment: These flashcards are a useful and valued learning tool by many students. They would be less useful in courses that deviate from the amount of anatomy that used to be covered in most courses, frustrating students as the cards/website cannot be customized as a learning tool specific to their course. This is becoming an expectation of many professional students.
