Description: This book couples the outstanding classic images of Frank Netter with well-designed illustrations of recent biochemical concepts to provide a visual approach to understanding how drugs affect the living body. This is a unique, artful, visual presentation of pharmacodynamic relationships between drugs and the human body.
Purpose: The goal is to bring an artist's eye to visualize the anatomical, physiological, and biochemical underpinnings of pharmacology. The book does a marvelous job of providing a visual representation of how drugs treat specific disorders in the body.
Audience: This is intended to serve as an adjunct to more comprehensive pharmacology textbooks for medical, pharmacy, dental, nursing, and other health professionals.
Features: The book describes how drugs exert their actions by organizing the illustrations according to the chapter outlines found in most traditional pharmacology textbooks. What is unique about this book is that it uses modern, well-designed illustrations of biochemical and physiological processes perfectly correlated with the classical anatomical images created by the renowned work of physician-artist Frank Netter. The book includes a pin number that students can use to sign on to an accompanying website where they can access the full text and complement their mastery of pharmacology with online materials.
Assessment: Visual learners will love this unique book. Although I don't think this is an easy way to first learn pharmacology, there is no better resource for students to integrate all of the basic sciences into a meaningful understanding of how the human body works and how disorders of the human body can be impacted by drugs, after they have learned the basic actions of drugs. This is also an excellent resource for students to consolidate all their learned basic information prior to sitting for certification examinations and/or advancing into the clinical phase of their studies. Not only is this book scientifically accurate, it is a work of art. In addition to being an excellent learning resource, it also makes a very appropriate coffee table book to serve as a unique conversation piece for guests.
