Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a unique text that serves as a foundational orthopaedic text while benefiting from the universal love of the educational illustrations of Frank Netter. The first 12 chapters cover topics of the entire musculoskeletal system while the final 7 are organized by region and offer specific techniques and diagnoses for those areas. Where historical Netter drawings might have been considered outdated due to technique or new information, Netter successors John Craig and Carlos Marchado faithfully uphold the Netter tradition of high quality in the classic Netter style.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as an essential test on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. These are worthy objectives and mirror those of other foundational textbooks. Clearly the unique aspect of this text is how it blends in the classic Netter drawings throughout the up to date text authored by a number of highly qualified authors.
Audience: This book is intended for use by the many clinicians who will see patients with a myriad of muscluoloskeletal problems including students in medicine, physical therapy, osteopathy and residents in primary care, orthopaedics, family practice, and emergency medicine. I believe this is a great reference that student will flock to due to its quality text and attractive figures. I am sure many practicing orthopaedists will want one on their shelves as a teaching tool to their students too.
Features: As noted previously, the first dozen chapters cover a number of topics related to the entire musculoskeletal system with the final seven being more regional such as spine, shoulder, knee, etc. It should be noted that this text is not historical text with classic Netter drawings but rather an up to date text on orthopaedics that happens to use Netter as its illustrations. Each chapter is written to the expectations, science and techniques of 2006 and would therefore be valuable text for students of the musculoskeletal disease processes.
Assessment: There are a number of foundational orthopaedic texts on the market but none that is blessed with the classic Netter drawings we all love. The quality of the chapters is excellent and informative. The Netter illustrations will likely make this book a keepsake for students and primary care providers who do not go into orthopaedics but want to keep an orthopaedic basic reference on their desk in the future.
