Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Carol Scott-Conner, MD, PhD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This is a compact, pocket-sized, spiral-bound surgical anatomy manual that draws upon the excellent archive of Netter's surgical anatomy illustrations (supplemented by additional art by two equally talented physician-artists). Content is organized regionally and includes basic information on common conditions along with clear color illustrations.
Purpose: The book is designed to be a "just-in-time, point-of-contact review of anatomy for the most commonly encountered, surgically treated diseases and diagnoses." It is available in both paper and mobile versions, and in fact the initial impetus was to develop a mobile resource for use by students and residents. This is a worthy objective and the book amply meets the challenge.
Audience: It is intended for medical students during their surgical clerkship and for surgical residents. It also is of potential interest to more junior students, as well as to residents in related surgical specialties.
Features: The book goes through a logical, classic, regional order beginning with head and neck and progressing downward and distally. Within the regions, topics are selectively addressed. Thus, for the head, the primary topic covered is facial fractures. These are covered in detail, with clear color illustrations showing not only the relevant anatomy but also how various fractures present and the anatomic correlates. This selective approach dominates throughout. What is covered is covered extremely well. The selective approach allows the manual to remain compact and it will indeed serve as a pocket reference to the most common conditions. It will likely suffice for medical students. Residents will want to supplement this with a larger operative atlas or surgical anatomy book.
Assessment: This is an excellent contribution to the field. It is compact, but dense with information. The information is presented not only in text but also, in classic "Netter fashion," in color illustrations drawn by physician-artists. Residents and students would indeed be well-served by having this ready reference in their pockets or on their mobile digital devices.
