Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Raj Tummala, MD (Wyeth Pharmaceuticals)
Description: This is a comprehensive review of the latest in the complex field that combines neuroscience and informatics research to develop tools that will assist in better understanding the brain.
Purpose: The purpose is to comprehensively review the latest information in the developing field of neuroinformatics that will develop the basis for shared neuroscience data.
Audience: It is targeted primarily at anyone working in neurosciences research such as students, clinicians, and scientists.
Features: Neuroinformatics is a function of biomedical, behavioral science, mathematical and computer sciences, and engineering. The primary goal of this field is to understand the brain through sharing of research data which is increasing exponentially. Neuroinformatics would assist in sharing this data through interoperable web-based neuroscience data and knowledge bases, analytical and modeling tools, and computational models. The book is conceptually divided into four sections: neuroscience knowledge management, computational neuronal modeling and simulations, imaging, and neuroinformatics in genetics and neurodegenerative diseases. Neuroscience knowledge management describes in detail database architectures, neuroscience ontologies, XML data representation, and model specification. The second section describes the various computational models and simulations used in data analysis. Imaging describes the various traditional and noninvasive modalities for neuroanatomic imaging with workflow based approaches to analysis. The final section describes the applications of neuroinformatics in genetics and neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia and schizophrenia. Each chapter is written by experts in their respective areas. Information is highlighted through tables, graphs, and pictures. Each chapter also has an extensive reference section.
Assessment: This is an essential book for anyone looking for a better understanding of the fast growing field of neuroinformatics. This book presents the latest techniques in neuroinformatics through advanced models for sharing neuroscience data.
