A revised chapter on the role of rehabilitation after HIV infection and a new chapter on balance disorders are highlights of the third edition of this book, which updates the 1990 edition in several pertinent areas. The book provides a comprehensive discussion of neurological rehabilitation structured into three sections: theory, management of clinical problems, and special topics and techniques. The book's structure makes it useful in both didactic and clinical settings. The purpose is to provide the practitioner and the advanced student with a multitude of problem-solving strategies that can be used to tailor treatment approaches to individual clients. The book provides a firm foundation of knowledge in many areas related to neurological rehabilitation. Practitioners and advanced students in physical and occupational therapy are the primary audience for the book. Speech-language pathologists and rehabilitation nurses will also benefit from access to this comprehensive reference. The 48 contributors provide a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of individuals with neurological disorders. The previous edition was published in 2001.
Purpose: Using current clinical studies and scientific research, this book is designed to provide clinicians and students with a comprehensive discussion of all aspects of neurological rehabilitation through various problem-solving strategies to guide neurological examinations, evaluations, and interventions, enabling individualized and highly effective care. Due to the recent shift in therapeutic care from specific treatment approaches to evidence-based interventions and the tremendous increase of new information in neuroscience and intervention strategies, this book provides a significant contribution to the physical therapy community.
Audience: Darcy Umphred is one of the most respected clinicians in the field of neurological rehabilitation. With 29 years of practice and training in evaluation and treatment of disabilities and impairments in individuals with neurological problems and research interests in motor learning, the author brings a wealth of information for physical therapy students and even for experienced clinicians. All of the chapters have been revised and four new chapters have been added (on movement development across the life span, health and wellness, documentation, and cardiopulmonary interactions) to provide the most current information and research.
