Editorial Reviews

Booknews
The new edition (first, 1991) has been extensively revised but retains its mission as a learning and teaching text which affords approaches to neurological knowledge from the perspectives of clinical history and signs, from disease categories, and from the subspecialty disciplines and investigational methodologies. Volume 1 discusses principles of diagnosis and management, with 35 chapters on common neurological problems and 20 chapters on neurological investigations and related clinical neurosciences. Volume 2 covers the neurological disorders in 66 contributions arranged in categories such as complications of systemic disease, vascular diseases of the nervous system, tumors of the central nervous system, infections, effects of toxins and physical agents, the dementias, etc. Annotation c. From The Critics
Reviewer: Daniel B. Hier, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a comprehensive textbook of clinical neurology.
Purpose: The aim of the editors is to create the definitive textbook of clinical neurology.
Audience: This text is aimed at neurology residents, practicing neurologists, and other specialists and generalists with an interest in clinical neurology.
Features: This is a textbook masterpiece — approaches to neurological problems (35 chapters) from delirium to back pain, neurological investigations and clinical neurosciences (19 chapters) from neuroimaging to neurosurgery, and neurological diseases (31 chapters) from stroke to dementia are well covered. This book is filled cover to cover with excellent diagrams and images. The writing is by distinguished experts in their fields and is at a uniformly high and readable level.
Assessment: This is a truly superb text with encyclopedic coverage of the entire field of clinical neurology in a concise yet detailed and current fashion. Although every neurologist has a favorite text, in many ways this text challenges and surpasses the standards, including Rowland's Merritt's Textbook of Neurology, 9th Edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1995) and Adams' Principles of Neurology, 6th Edition (McGraw-Hill, 1997). The value of the text is further enhanced by a subscription to the www.nicp.com website that provides an online version of the book that is fully searchable with updates, discussion forums, and online videos. This book has clearly emerged as the standard of neurological education. Many neurology departments will certainly wish to take advantage of a group subscription to the interactive website. The editors should be congratulated on a truly significant contribution to neurological education.
