Purpose: Rapid advances have been made, especially in the last decade, in our understanding of the function of the neuromuscular system, the many ways in which the normal function can become disordered, and the accurate diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders. The authors have attempted to provide, in a single, all-encompassing, two-volume book an account of the essential molecular, physiological and anatomical underpinnings of the peripheral and related central components of the neuromuscular system; pathophysiology of neuromuscular disorders; clinical features and differential diagnosis of the various neuromuscular diseases; and the place of electrophysiological testing in the diagnosis and management of neuromuscular disorders. These are worthy objectives.
Audience: The authors hope that this book is a useful aid to clinicians, clinical neurophysiologists, and others who deal with patients who have neuromuscular diseases as well as basic scientists who work on the fundamental aspects of disordered neuromuscular function. This book is of great value to neurologists in training, practicing neurologists and neurophysiologists and physicians from other specialties who deal with patients with neuromuscular diseases.
Features: Volume I provides information about basic molecular, physiological and pathophysiological basis of neuromuscular diseases. It also includes sections on autonomic and respiratory systems, imaging techniques, age-related changes in neuromuscular system and technical aspects of neuromuscular testing. Volume II focuses on clinical features of the neuromuscular diseases and on the practical applications of electrophysiological tests to their diagnosis and management. The tables, graphs and photographs in the entire book are of high quality. The explanations that follow the graphs and photographs are complete and lucid. The references at the end of each chapter are complete, exhaustive, and current.
Assessment: The book provides a good review of the basic, clinical and electrodiagnostic aspects of neuromuscular diseases. The authors have done an excellent job of summarizing data about the major advances in the neuromuscular field. It definitely is a useful aid to all clinicians involved in the management of patients with neuromuscular disorders and all basic scientists who work on the fundamental aspects of disordered neuromuscular function.
