Editorial Reviews

Summarizes essentials of neuropathology in outline form, providing an overview of neuropathology for those first encountering the discipline and a framework for review for those preparing for in-service and board examinations in the disciplines of neurology, neurosurgery, and pathology. The first eleven chapters outline basic information on the spectrum of neurologic-related disease. Two chapters present b&w pictorial examples of neuropathologic conditions in a question format with answers and brief explanations provided. Two final chapters present questions and explained answers reviewing material presented earlier. The author is affiliated with the Department of Anatomic Pathology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Reviewer: Karen Sterling SantaCruz, MD (University of Kansas School of Medicine)
Description: This is a well organized outline of neuropathology that is most useful for neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry and pathology residents studying for board exams. Although there are no references, residents can easily identify gaps in knowledge using the outline and board-type questions from this book. This allows readers to guide the study of neuropathology using a more complete text. Photographs are of good quality and show the classic features of the lesions depicted.
Purpose: The purpose is to introduce topics of neuropathology in an organized manner to physicians in specialties other than neuropathology and to assist residents who are studying for in-service or board exams. This book is especially useful to residents who are learning neuropathology independently, but will also help direct learning objectives for residents on neuropathology rotations.
Audience: It is written for non-neuropathologists who require a working knowledge of neuropathology for the optimum practice of his specialty. Students and residents will learn basic concepts of neuropathology as they page through the outline, look at photos, and answer questions. Residents in neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry will refresh their knowledge of neuropathology and identify weaknesses while studying for in-service or board exams. The author is a neuropathologist who is expert at distilling a complicated topic into a manageable overview.
Features: This book provides an overview of major topics in neuropathology without attempting to include recent advances or esoteric details. The comprehensive outline, well-selected photographs, pertinent questions and answers, and thorough index help a reader learn important concepts and direct his further study of neuropathology. Since there are no references, most readers will use a more comprehensive textbook in conjunction with this review.
Assessment: Although there are books that summarize basic topics in neuropathology, these are somewhat rare and often do not include an outline or questions and answers to help residents prepare for exams and guide further study.
