Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Celso Agner, MD, MS, MSc (Michigan Neurology Partners)
Description: The fifth edition of this pre-test review volume follows the 2002 edition and adds to the study armamentarium for medical students and foreign physicians in their process of integration into the American medical system.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive review of relevant neuroscience topics for the USMLE Step I. Those authors accomplish these worthy objectives.
Audience: Medical students and foreign physicians are the main target for this book. In my view, the authors have reached the book's target audience. The credibility of the authors is incomparable.
Features: In over 150 pages and eight chapters, this book addresses the wealth of knowledge accumulated in the field of neuroscience. The main need for a fifth edition in such a short time (the fourth edition was published in 2002) is due to the constant changes in the examination, with the incorporation of clinical vignettes that involve the direct application of neurological concepts. Otherwise, the clinical structure is similar to previous edition(s). The references are up-to-date and the multiple choice questions reflect the structure of the new USMLE format. In my view, it is not a totally necessary edition but some students may find it useful to be exposed to the new format, as it may increase the confidence of test takers.
Assessment: This is a good purchase for general and neuroscience libraries, as neurologists, neuroscientists, and medical students may find it a useful study tool for the American Medical Boards.
