Overview

A classy introductory text to how the nervous system works highlighting the challenges, controversies, and uncertainties in neuroscience. The 15 contributors (neurobiology, Duke U. Medical Center) extend both their talents in neuroscience and teaching in a systematic outline of the nervous system's organization, neural signaling, sensation and sensory processing, movement and its central control, brain development, and complex brain function including discussions of cognition, sleep, and sexuality. Includes quality color illustrations and photographs.

"...created primarily for medical students, this comprehensi ve text emphasizes the structure of the nervous system, the correlation of structure & function,, and structure/function relationships pertinent to the study of medicine."

Booknews
A text/CD-ROM for undergraduates, medical students, and graduate students in the neurosciences, highlighting the excitement and uncertainties of the field. Contains units on neural signaling, sensation and sensory processing, movement and its central control, the changing brain, and complex brain functions. The CD-ROM contains an interactive atlas of the human nervous system which can function as a stand-alone atlas and as a tool for visualizing the neuroanatomical structures described in the text. The interactive atlas features images of a whole brain and sections, animations, and MRIs of a living brain. Author information is not given. Annotation c. Description: Neurophysiology is a constantly changing field. Upgrades are needed at all times and the ability to explain the new molecular findings in a natural and yet readable form remains a challenge faced by whoever writes these books.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to address the current physiological understanding acquired over the most recent research experiments. Those are worthy objectives fully met by the authors.
Audience: Neurologists, graduate students, medical students, and neurosurgeons are the main target for this book. In my view, those audiences have been well served by this book. The authors are definite authorities in the field.
Features: Multiple authors contribute 30 chapters to this book. The contents of each chapter reflect the most modern understanding of the neurophysiology of the brain and the potential applications of neuroscience into the daily clinical understanding of functions such as sleep, pain, sensory modulation, and behavior. Until now, it is very much like other classic textbooks in the field. The drawings and charts are, however, more self-explanatory than they are in many of the other books I have seen. This represents a definite contribution to graduate and medical student, who need to quickly understand complex concepts in a short amount of time.
Assessment: This is an important purchase for general medical libraries.
