Meet the Author

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Donald Goines (1936-1974) was an African-American writer of urban fiction. A career criminal and drug addict who took up writing during one of his seven prison sentences, Goines’s books are now recognized as almost unbearably authentic portraits of the roughest aspects of the black experience. In addition to his Kenyatta series, written under the pen name Al C. Clark, Goines published a number of stand-alone novels, including Dopefiend, Whoreson, and others.

my comentary on never die alone: this book was a little gritty and some of it was very close to the film.King David was a selfish guy who I would not bother to call a real man.He had to have everything his way or no way.The way he totally messed up that woman with the battery acid mixed with the dope, was truly brutal!!!Making the return back to New York after what he done to the kingpin,Moon, was a very dumb mistake.I mean who could really forget about a person who has done a great injustice to them?I liked the character of mike in both the book and the film. The way things went for mike in the end for mike in both the novel and the movie were different but,I'm not going to spoil that.Overall, it's about how nothing good can come from greed, how what you put out, comes right back to you.

I told you'll that I was going to read it! I was pleased to see how close the book, and movie were to one another! With very minor differences.
What's that saying? You live by the sword you die by the sword. OH YES! King David was a grimy dude insistent on doing whatever it took to get whatever he wanted and the cost didn't matter. Your last dollar, your dignity, your life he took and took until the tables flipped and his greed cost him dearly in the end as he tried to settle with the past.
What goes around comes back around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand why my ex-boyfriend was so intrigued by Goines' books. When I saw the movie, I had to finally read a book from Goines in hopes to find the answers to the questions I had. Surprisingly, I liked the movie better. The ending to this book was quick, but unrealistic (about Paul) whereas Paul's ending in the movie was reasonable. But the ending with Mike in this book was more believable than his ending in the movie. I liked the fact that the movie made King David and Mike have a deeper connection whereas the book didn't. Michael Ealy and the lady who played Juanita (Parenthood) played their parts to the tea. But I still think the reason King David came back was vague and stupid, in the movie and the book. On the upside, I will be buying more of his books.

My barber put me on to Mr. Goines. I bought the book last night and finished the last 40 pages as soon as I got up this morning. Addictive!

I think this is one of Goines best books. He truely outdoes himself in this book. He keeps it real in this book from the time you open it,it will have you guessing on how much of this is really real and is the main character in the book himself.

THIS BOOK WAS CALM, COMPARED TO DONALD GOINES OTHER BOOKS. IT DID NOT HAVE AS MUCH KILLINGS AS HIS OTHERS. I LIKE THE BOOK BECAUSE IT LET OUT A DEAD MAN'S SECRETS AND HOW CRUEL A PERSON CAN BE. KING COBRA WAS COLD HEARTED TO THE DAY HE DIED.

I ENJOYED READING THIS BOOK. IT SHOWED HOW OUT COLD AND COLD HEARTED A PERSON CAN BE. IT ALSO SHOWED HOW A PERSON CAN BE HONEST WHEN THERE IS NOTHING IN THE WORLD GOING HIS WAY. I LIKE DONALD GOINES BOOK, BUT THIS ONE IS MELLOW COMPARED TO HIS OTHER BOOKS. I LOVE THE WAY HE SPEAKS THE TRUTH.

This book had me on the edge of seat. I was kinda upset for King David, until I read all that he had destroyed. Everyone in the book got what they deserved, except Paul.
