Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Mnemonic devices are tricks for remembering all kinds of information that one usually just has to memorize. This book is a list of tricks like those catchy phrases that we have all heard that help us remember common things like the notes on the lines of the treble clef in music (Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge). Written for grade school aged readers who are curious about the world around them or who want to impress their 5th grade teachers, this book will have ready readers in middle school. While the book contains some lists of information that I personally have never been called upon to recall, some of the memory tricks are quite useful. The more useful ones are the planets in the solar system and the colors in the rainbow, both in order. Some of the not-so-useful tricks are the Mohs scale of mineral hardness and the cardinal directions. Most of us would just look up the former and never forget the latter. There is also a guide for creating your own mnemonic devices and a guide for other memory activities. A glossary, index and list of other sources complete the book. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
