Never End presents the possibility of the return, five years later, of a serial rapist. The emotional impact of the story unfolds in with the new victims and their families. But the most powerful chord struck immediately is the author’s treatment of the families of years ago, when everything is re-opened. He was so great at capturing grief, just like how the show THE KILLING handles the subject. I don’t understand how the qualities of these Erik Winter mysteries remain so good, time after time.
Usually you disconnect to the awfulness of it all, but I find myself feeling strong emotions for the cops and the victims. I like some of the cops as people, as they are presented, and the way they interact with people in their jobs. They are not perfect, but I feel they are people. Not too eloquent to seem overly constructed by the author, but still revealing of character, their compassion for justice, and the amount to which they are decent, to name a few qualities. He also captures a cop’s struggle to detach from the crime, and the consequences/benefits of that, the wistfulness, dreaminess and hopelessness dealing constantly with tragedy, and the dreariness once expects from a northern, cold setting.
My only, I won’t say critique, just an interesting observation, is a peculiar sense of shock and naïveté the cops experience when encountering underground industries, sex clubs, etc. in his mysteries. I don’t know if it’s my desensitization to violence and American culture, or if it’s just I can’t remember the years in which those types of crimes became prevalent, since these books weren’t recently written. All in all a great mystery, yet again, by Edwardson.
