About the Author

I've always had a vivid imagination. I was raised in a home
filled with love, but everything changed when I turned ten
— shortly after 9/11. My dad lost his company, and from
that moment on, I had to grow up quickly.
My brother needed a place to stay, and my dad made sure
none of his kids were ever left behind. Though some in my
family only remember his flaws, I remember his strength
and humanity. When everything was on the line, he worked
tirelessly, pulling all-nighters — we barely saw him, but he
never stopped trying.
Mum was kind, though sometimes unaware of the world
around her. My brother got married young, at nineteen, and
had three children. As Dad’s health began to decline, I
helped Mum raise the kids. My brother and his wife were
hardly around, and she wasn’t always kind to me. But through
those challenges, I found my passion for storytelling.
Helping raise my brother’s kids gave me a new
perspective, and my love for dragons and fantasy only grew.
Despite struggling with reading and writing disabilities —
and being bullied by some teachers — I found my voice
through stories.
Those hardships taught me something important: there
are many people like me who are treated differently for
simply being themselves. This book is for them, too.
