Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 1-2

These early chapter books begin and end in the time-out chair. In Friends , Roscoe's first-grade class is getting ready for open house. It's supposed to involve a performance of singing bumblebees followed by dessert. However, add one hyper, trouble-finding boy (Roscoe) with a tube of Super-Mega-Gonzo Glue and too many bright ideas and you've got a recipe for disaster. In Sweater , Roscoe trades an itchy sweater that his grandmother made him for his neighbor's dog so he can enter the animal in a pet show. The protagonist always means well and the adults can usually see a big heart behind his antics-after they've calmed down a bit. Both stories are fun reads with simple and amusing cartoon illustrations. Good choices for children transitioning from beginning readers to chapter books.-Kelly Roth, Bartow County Public Library, Cartersville, GA

Meet the Author

Unlike Roscoe, Katherine Applegate has never raced any giant pumpkins. She did, however, try to grow some when she was a kid. She ended up with one puny pumpkin shaped like a Cheez Doodle. Katherine has two kids, one husband, and several pets, and lives in California, where she no longer attempts to raise oversized fruit.

Roscoe Riley Rules #1: Never Glue Your Friends to Chairs

Chapter One

Welcome to Time-Out

Hey! Over here!

It's me. Roscoe.

Welcome to the Official Roscoe Riley Time-out Corner.

Want to hang out with me?

I have to warn you, though. We're going to be here for a while.

See, I kinda got in some trouble today.

Again.

Kids have to follow so many rules!

Sometimes my brain forgets to remem-ber them all.

It's not like I try to find ways to get in trouble. It's just that trouble has a way of finding me.

Truth is, I'm just a normal, everyday kid like you.

My favorite food is blue M&M's. My favorite sport is bed jumping. My favorite color is rainbow.

And my most not-favorite thing is lima beans.

See? Like I said. Just a normal, everyday kid.

A normal, everyday kid who sometimes gets into trouble.

Like today. I was just trying to help out my teacher.

How was I supposed to know you shouldn't glue people to chairs?

With Super-Mega-Gonzo Glue?

You've done that, haven't you?

Oh.

Never?

Oh.

Well, maybe you should hear the whole story. . . . Roscoe Riley Rules #1: Never Glue Your Friends to Chairs. Copyright © by Katherine Applegate. Reprinted by permission of HarperCollins Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved. Available now wherever books are sold.

    Great First Chapter Books

My son just finished 1st grade. He can read harder stuff but these are good light reads for when he's getting bogged down with something harder and needs to boost his reading confidence. We're going to continue with the whole series. Lots of illustrations and shorter chapters. Slightly easier than Magic Treehouse.

Great book for my 7 year old who doesn't love reading.  It's fun

Great book for my 7 year old who doesn't love reading.
It's funny, and realistic. Roscoe is candid and honest about his family and his ... imperfections.

It's easier than Magic Treehouse with more illustrations and chapters with varying lengths. A few at the beginning are only 1-2 pages, and it's great for building confidence.
We'll definitely be picking up more in the set.

    Terrific book!

I bought this for my 6 year old because the title is funny. He loved it! He thought Roscoe was silly for gluing his friends to chairs. He talked about this book for a week after reading it and even brought it to school for his teacher to read.

    Highly Recommended

My 6 year old told me about this book. When I first saw how many pages the book had (36 pages--which isn't very much, but when you have to read children's book almost every night, you don't make it past the 5th page most of the time with most books. You end up passing out before your kids) I was hesitant to buy it. Espcially, since I have a 1st gen NOOK with no colors. But she begged and her sister begged (4 yrs old) so I caved. I was glad because this book is great! It is witty, hilarious. I loved reading it to them. My eldest loves reading it (with my help). Jokes that parents and kids can relate to. The books always has my kids (and me) crackin' up. Which is great way to exhaust them to sleep. It looks there are 7 books in the series. We are on our second now (Never Swipe a Bully's Bear), but that's because we read this 1st one like three times. Must read!

    Fun Series to read

My son likes these books not only because they're quick easy readers (he's in 3rd grade)but because they are funny. He likes that the character Roscoe Riley is always getting into mischief. He recommends these books.

    Great book!

I am so excited about this series! I read it to our 1st Grade son, who LOVED this book. He wanted to read all the others in the series (which we haven't purchased yet). He can't quite read it by himself yet, but he loved the story line, and it was very funny. This book is great for 1st grade and up...a second grader could probably read it in it's entirety. Perfect for boys, as well! I personally enjoyed it better than Junie B. or Magic Treehouse.
