Overview

In this modern retelling of "Hansel and Gretel," 13-year-old foster children, Holden and Griselda, escape from their abductor after three years of brutal captivity and try to cross the Shenandoah River on foot. Tragically, one of them makes it to safety but the other is left behind.

Ten years later, Griselda's boyfriend drags her to a fight club grudge match where her world is turned upside down when she watches Holden step into the ring.

Though the connection between them is fierce, bitter regret, simmering rage and a cache of physical and emotional scars lie between them, just as dangerous as the whitewater of the Shenandoah.

Never Let You Go is a story of fear and hope, defeat and survival, and two people - once profoundly broken - who discover that love is the only thing that can make them whole again.

This is a standalone novel inspired by Hansel & Gretel. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to profanity, scenes of physical abuse and very strong sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18. (Note: children are not sexually abused in this book.)

For June and July 2015, 25% of all gross royalties will be donated to the Elizabeth Smart Foundation.

Never Let You Go is Katy Regnery as we’ve never seen her before. While this book is a love story in the end, it’s darker than Ms. Regnery’s Blueberry Lane series. The characters are not millionaires. They are gritty and real. The reader takes a journey with Griselda and Holden from the first to the last page. You’ve probably read the synopsis, so I won’t repeat it here. Let me start by saying that out of the 700+ books on my NOOK, I have NEVER cried after reading a Prologue…until now. Without giving away any spoilers, I will say that I thought this story was going to center around the anticipation of Gris and Holden’s reunion, followed by the angst with Holden not wanting to rush and scare Gris off, with Gris mistaking his controlled distance as brotherly affection and residual feelings for his girlfriend Gemma. While this does have a part in the story, there are other obstacles and plot twists that I didn’t see coming. Gris is on a road to redemption for forgiveness from Holden, and both characters have to find out who they are now that they aren’t searching for each other anymore. Both of them realize they want/need to find their place in the world. Something else that struck me with this book was that certain words, phrases, mantras that the hero and heroine repeat throughout the book were the driving force behind my emotional responses…and boy was I emotional. The language and dialogue is extremely thoughtful, and beautifully written. In my opinion, Never Let You Go is Katy Regnery’s SWAN SONG. I’d like to think that her writing legacy will forever be associated with this book. Griselda and Holden’s story was a heartbreaking, intense, sexy, suspenseful, and enduring journey toward true love….the PERFECT blend of everything I yearn for in a good book. If you like books by Mia Sheridan and Amy Harmon, you will love this book. I rarely give 5 stars on reviews, but if I could give more to this one, it would be well-deserved. Bravo Katy Regnery! *This is a stand-alone novel with alternating points of view.

I love when the unexpected happens. And Author Katy Regnery has done just this with Never Let You Go. I had read the three previous modern fairytales (go read them) so I had the expectation of HEA with maybe a few hills and valley to traverse. What I didn't expect was this soul-wrenching, heart-breaking story of two very broken but brave souls finding their HEA. Holden and Gris have a childhood that happy, ordinary individuals only read about in the media; never have to live it. "I'm b-broken, " he finally whispered. "But I think I could be whole again." This is story of overcoming obstacles to find the life you deserve. The reader learns about Gris and Holden from childhood to young adult through flashbacks in alternating POV. They are both former member of the foster system and forced to become closer through a shared tragic experience as kids. Unerringly forced apart, you learn about that trials to get them to where they meet up as adults. It's not easy, but life never is. Ms Regnery's characters show you what it is like to face your past, learn to trust what you have, and brave moving forward to something new, something possibly very good. I believe my past experiences with working in foster system helped me develop an instant connection to the characters where I wanted their HEA so badly. So if you've read Katy Regnery before, do not expect a "Katy Regnery" story. Expect something heart-breaking, beautiful, soul-crushing and lovely. If you've not read this author before and you love a story with depth, a bit dark and gritty, break you into pieces but not kill you in over angst, then pick up this novel along with a box of Kleenex to enjoy a beautiful ride. 5+ out 5 stars

I can't describe the plethora of emotions that went though my body and mind while reading this book WOW! Now that I'm done I can breathe again. Lol. I feel like I've been holding my breath the whole time. Griselda and Hoden were so strong in the face of the most horrible and terrifying time of their lives. But through everything their love for each other was never ending and kept each other alive. I extremely recomend this book to everyone. Be prepared because you'll cry a lot but not always out of sadness sometimes your heart will be so full of happiness you won't be able to stop the tears from falling. This story touched my heart so deeply I don't think I'll ever be able to forget it. I will definitely be telling my friends about this book.

theavidbooknerd.wordpress.com Griselda and Holden met in a foster home. Both wards of the state, they immediately feel a connection to each other that goes beyond their young minds. Just beginning to know each other, they walk along a country road on an errand for their foster parents. A man pulls up in a truck and claims Griselda and Holden’s foster parents sent him to drive them back. A wrong decision unfortunately sentences them to three years of forced slavery to The Man. He calls them Seth and Ruth and his deluded mind believes they are his little brother and sister. He puts chains on them and forces them to garden, can and work until bleeding to save their damned souls. The book opens to a harrowing escape of the two children. They are running for their lives and attempting to cross the Shenandoah River. Griselda makes it across but Holden is caught. His last word to Griselda, before The Man knocks him out, is “run!” After escaping, she runs straight to a sheriff, wildly demanding they find him. But by the time they made it back to the farm where Holden and Griselda had been held, he and The Man were gone. Ten years later – Griselda is working as a nanny for a senator’s family and secretly saving up the funds to hire a private investigator to find Holden. She hates every minute of her life, not knowing whether he’s safe or dead. Zelda stays with her abusive boyfriend to try and salvage her guilt for leaving Holden behind. But when Jonah, the abusive boyfriend, orders her to steal from the family she works for to fund a trip to West Virginia Zelda refuses. Instead she secretly withdraws some money from her “Find Holden” fund – an action that breaks her heart. Afraid of going back to West Virginia when her nightmares of her time there are bad enough, Zelda is more afraid of what Jonah will do if she doesn’t go. The trip brings up her earliest memories of Holden and show the reader how they met and fell into a pure and sweet young love. Memories of their time in the foster home, of their capture and captivity bond both Holden and Griselda as well as the reader to these two tortured souls. Zelda swims in a mass of sorrow, guilt and uncertainty the closer they get to their destination. And Jonah does nothing to help. Shortly after arriving he hears about a local fight club and plans on the whole group going. After experiencing so much violence as a child Zelda has no interest but again he threatens her into attending. Hiding from the blood, Zelda is approached by two drunk rednecks. After fighting them off she heads closer to the fight to yell at Jonah for bringing her into this situation. By doing so Zelda shows her face to the fighters – and one recognizes her. It’s Holden, only he goes by Seth now. Recognizing the love of his life, one he thought had been murdered for trying to escape, Holden fights his way to where she is on the side of the ring but is stabbed before he can make it. The referee, a close friend of Holden’s, had recognized Zelda from a tattoo on Holden’s arm and goes to retrieve her. Zelda, having had her suspicions confirmed, drops everything and heads to Holden’s apartment. The reunion is so strong and emotional I had to set my phone down and just cry. After everything the two had been through that moment was so needed for both the characters and me, the reader. Through out the ten years apart, they had never forgotten the other and their love had endured.

Once reading the blurb, I knew I wanted to read this story. It's a modern retelling of Hansel and Gretel and I was looking forward to the uniqueness of it. NLYG had my attention from the very first page and held it. I couldn't put it down. What Holden and Gris go through as children is unthinkable and what they endure as adults is heartbreaking. Some connections can never be broken even in death. Some words I can use to describe this story are: TRAGIC. HEARTBREAKING. GUT WRENCHING. BEAUTIFUL . This is a story that will stay with me long after I've read the final word. - " What happens next?" "I'll make you come. I'll hold you while you sleep. I'll change for you. I'll live for you. I'll never let you go."

This is a book not for the weak at heart. The unbelievably cruel events that happen to Holden and Gris will pull at your strings. At one point in the book you'll think this is it, they will never make it out but this book does give a happy ending you just don't see coming. Thanks Aestas book blog for the recommendation.

Intensely moving and well-crafted Favorite Quotes: “She loved him in a way that was necessary, not luxurious.  She loved him like the tide loves the sand – trapped together, one lost without the other, pushed and pulled, but never ripped apart.  She loved him in a deep and singular way, almost as though God had crafted one heart in heaven, then spilt it between Holden’s body and hers, fating her to a never-ending longing to be with him, or a fractional life without him.” “I love you, and when I say that, I mean that you’re my reason for breathing, for eating, for drinking, for sleeping, for living.  I will never hurt you.  I will never leave you.  I will always protect you.  There is no one more important to me that you, and as long as I live, there never w-will be.” “It’s a strange thing to feel your heart break.  Cartoons would have you believe it’s like breaking a cracker.  It snaps in half, with red crumbs falling to the ground, leaving two jagged halves sitting side by side.  All you’d have to do is shove them together and they’d look like one again.” “She tasted like tea and honey, heat and home, and every part of her fit into every part of him, like a puzzle piece, like the missing half of his soul.” “For all my life – all my life – you have been my beating heart, the woman of my dreams.” “I fell in love with you when I was ten years old because you were pretty and you weren’t mean.  And I would’ve died so many times in this life if it hadn’t been for you… my angel, my friend, my family, my hope, my joy, my love.” My Review:   I have had a girl crush on Katy Regnery since reading my first English Brother novel, quite some time ago.  Her enchanting romances are sweet and adorable, so I was totally unprepared for the devastation she was to bring me with Never Let You Go.  Make no mistake, Katy Regnery has major writing chops – and the proof being that I am, and was, a total wreck while enthralled with her latest tome.  Throughout the reading of this masterful work, Ms. Regnery turned me inside out, and did so several times.   I felt a thousand snakes squirming under my skin, yet I could not stop reading.  I was anxious, uncomfortable, heartbroken, desperate, sobbing… yet I could not stop reading.  I was essentially striped raw by her powerful and dynamic narrative, which alternated from sorrow to delight, all while being achingly emotional throughout.  Yet even at the lowest of times, there were echoes and whispers of hope, and her magic words tapped every emotion to my very core.  Ms. Regnery’s writing is crafty and insightful, and she skillfully captured the confusing and contradictory relationships that can occur between abusers and their victims, and the years of warped thinking and feelings of worthlessness that can result.  The tale contained a teeter-totter of happiness and despair back and forth in the story, past and present, with dual POV, but when their reunions swung to the positive end - it was earth shatteringly marvelous for both. And the sensual scenes – oh my - they sizzled off the page, and often left me breathless and in need of a cool beverage.  But what touched me most, was the sweetness and courage of a small boy driven to repeatedly protect and shield his beloved friend from the cruelty of a madman, despite their misfortune being her fault… and in later years, the tenderness, of the boy now a man, in how he continued to treat and adore her, despite the harshness of their intervening lives.  This was not an easy read, but one that is well-written, finely-crafted and expertly hewn.  I have a feeling these characters are going to be occupying my head space for quite some time.

Ever heard that line “ Fairytales are for children only” ? – Well read “Never Let You Go” by Katy Regnery and reconsider that line PLEASE. Fairytales are no longer just for children. They are remodeled and brought to a totally new life by authors like Kate Regnery. I am not sure what I should tell you about this book that you do not already know from your childhood or that you should not be told at this point because of spoilers. On the other hand – you better forget everything you thought you knew about that story and go into it with an open mind. What you will find is an amazing lovestory that was turned into an almost movie worthy book. Please enjoy …

( Never Let You Go, A Modern Fairytale, Katy Regenery Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews  Genre:  Romance, Fairy Tales I loved Katy’s first in the series The Vixen and the Vet, and this one is a remake of Handsel and Gretel. I loved fairytales  as a child, though we had few books we had a set of encyclopaedias which had some of the old stories in them, Grimm’s, Aesop’s Fables and the like. These weren’t todays prettied up, sanitised stories but very gruesome at times, with horrible fantasy creatures, blood and gore, murders and not always a happy ending either... I loved the imaginary worlds, the way anything could and did happen, and the dramas in them( adored The Little Match Girl, wept buckets at the ending but constantly re read it anyway!) Its no wonder I always had nightmares... Anyway Katy’s Hansel and Gretel are Holden and Griselda, who go through a horrific upbringing, foster homes, kidnapping and unspeakable cruelty before Griselda finally escapes. She’s guilt ridden that though she went to police they were never able to find Holden. The Man as they called him, Caleb Foster and Holden have disappeared. She’s never given up hope though, has slowly ben saving to employ a professional to find him, her own searches having gone no-where. Its tough though saving on minimum wage, and its now ten years on since she last saw him.  Then when her awful boyfriend Jonah drags her to a fist fight there he is, and she just can’t believe it. Neither can he but its not all happy ever after. They’ve lived a lot since they parted, had many experiences, and there’s much to tell. Neither Jonah or Holden’s girlfriend Gemma are happy about the reunion, and there’s much animosity from them. Even then just when it looks like finally they may be able to be together there’s a final spanner in the works. Are they ever to find happiness? They certainly deserve it but life isn’t about fairness.  Well, its a really good read, a clever retelling but....whereas with the Vixen I was hooked all the way I did feel at times this dragged. Mostly on the looking back, where the story is told from their childhood POV, where we learn what’s happening to them. I needed to know of course, but found that the story seemed to repeat in ways after a while and I just skipped sections. Its a long read, and usually I’m moaning its too short but TBH here I’d have preferred a bit less of the past, enough to tell the story of course, and complete the Hansel and Gretel remake theme, but let the focus be on them now. I wasn’t keen either on the professor and his wife connection, just seemed a little too convenient – still, truth is often stranger than fiction, but for me that section was just a little extraneous.  For June and July 2015, 25% of all gross royalties will be donated to the Elizabeth Smart Foundation.  Stars: Four, a read that remakes the tale well to fit modern times, and gives much to think about ARC supplied by Netgalley and publishers

Never Let You Go is another amazing book from author Katy Regnery. This is a darker story than her previous books but it still had the strong characters, heartwarming moments, and sweet and steamy romance that I have grown to love from this author. I loved everything about this book! Never Let You Go is the second book in Katy Regnery’s A Modern Fairytale series and is a standalone. This is inspired by the Hansel and Gretel classic tale but don’t expect a fairytale romance. This is a love story but it is also a story of survival. Holton and Griselda first meet when they are 10-years-old in a foster home. On a family picnic they are kidnapped by Caleb Foster, a mentally disturbed man who mistaken them for his younger siblings. On a mission to “save” the children he keeps them captive and forces them to work hard in his garden and beats them when they break his rules. After 3 years of captivity Holton and Griselda try to escape but it doesn’t go as planned. Griselda is the only one to escape. She spends years waiting for the day to reunite with Holton. The time apart has been painful for both of them. They both have felt they did not deserve to be loved so their reunion isn’t an instant happily ever after. Holton and Griselda have to rebuild the trust they once had. They both have guarded their hearts to protect themselves from disappointment, but now they have to learn to love again. Holton and Griselda fought to stay alive while they were captive so when their path to a new life together becomes complicated they have to fight again to stay together. Never Let You Go is an emotional story of healing and making sacrifices for the ones we love. This story was heartbreaking and uplifting and will stay with me forever. Katy Regnery is a talented writer and I admire her for taking a chance on a more intense and darker story. The abuse scenes were brutal and emotional but it was necessary to understand Holton and Griselda’s painful past. Even though the violence was disturbing the author blended scenes of them as children that were heartwarming and gave a sense of hope. I truly felt the strong connection between Holton and Griselda. Katy Regnery continues to be one of my favorite authors and I am blown away with how powerful this story is. I highly recommend Never Let You Go to romance fans of eternal love affairs that survive against all the odds.

Never Let You Go drew me in immediately, and I couldn't put it down. Griselda is an awesome heroine, who definitely doesn't give herself enough credit or see her true worth throughout the story. Holden is an awesome hero, who has overcome so much and still sees the good in some people who definitely don't deserve it. This book is full of angst and love, with twists and turns throughout. My heart broke for the 2 teens who thought they had lost so much, and it continued to break until they finally got their current lives to meld. The story flowed so well, and I am looking forward to the next Modern Fairytale from Katy Regnery. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a phenomenal read (just make sure to have tissues ready)

Never Let You Go is a modern day fairytale, the newest from one of my favorite authors Katy Regnery.  Although this story is edgier than Katy’s other novels, I can still feel her presence through the writing never doubting that this is definitely one of her stories.  The emotions she makes me feel while reading her books is indescribable always giving me the experience of such an intense connection to her characters as their lives leap off of the pages of my Kindle and touch my heart.   Griselda and Holden spent their lives at a young age in the foster system after the loss of their parents/family, ultimately living together in the same home.  But when they are suddenly abducted, they end up spending three years being held captive together and both being abused.  As they begin to fear for their lives, they finally make the decision to attempt an escape never anticipating that one of them will ultimately be unable to get away.  Having spent the last ten years never giving up hope of seeing Holden again, Griselda unexpectedly finds him in a situation she never anticipated.  From the moment they reconnect, the chemistry and deep connection they shared as children which had intertwined their hearts once more awakens their souls as adults never having been broken despite their separation and the passage of years.  When they decide to disappear from the lives they have been living to get to know each other again, their mutual physical craving skyrockets out of control finally leading them to the relationship they had never shared in their youth.  Now as they begin to rediscover each other and learn how they have each spent their lives while separated, they both struggle to understand the individual decisions they ultimately made.  Will Griselda and Holden be able to overcome those choices and learn to let go of the past to finally find their happily ever after and build the life together they had always dreamed of? Through this story, my emotions ran the gamut from laughter to heartbreak.  The unfaltering and never-ending love shared between Griselda and Holden despite some of the obstacles they must face is deeply touching, and their intense passion for one another practically shot sparks off of the pages.  As I now sit here writing this review reliving their story in my mind, it brings tears to my eyes and a soreness and lump in my throat while simultaneously leaving me with a smile on my face as I recall the tender moments and overwhelming love Gris and Holden shared.  This is an absolutely incredible story proving that despite the hurt and pain suffered in the past, the strength that can grow from within (both individually as well as together) can lead down a path towards the undying love that developed from an early age which becomes even stronger and guides them towards an everlasting connection unable to be broken.  I applaud Ms. Regnery for this outstanding and remarkable story.  I wish she could have seen me as I read the final words delivering to her a standing ovation for Never Let Me Go.  Such a spectacular novel this is, and I have again fallen in love with Katy’s characters and was sad to have to say goodbye.  There were definitely countless times that I found myself wanting to read faster just so I could know how the story ends, while at the same time wanting it to go on forever as I didn’t want to let them go.

WOW, I can't even begin to describe what I'm feeling for this book. The story of Holden and Griselda will rope you in and invest you so deep that you can't stop reading. Their love is so crucial, so necessary, and so devastatingly elemental that they can't breathe without the other. You laugh, you cry, you break and you melt right along with them. This is by far Katy's best book and one of the best I've ever read. It will touch your soul and grab you by the heart strings and make you pray right along with them. "I jump, you jump.." those words are so accurate throughout the entire story. Again, wow. You won't be disappointed and you won't walk away from this story the same. It will touch you like no other story has...

Never Let You Go left me emotionally spent. My heart broke for these two innocents. Katy Regnery has written a story that consists of pain, hope, heartbreak and redemption. This journey is not for the faint of heart. Received an ARC for an review. Well done.
