NEVER LOVE A SCOUNDREL by Darcy Burke is an exciting Regency Historical Romance set in 1818 London. #5 in the "Secrets and Scandals" series, can be read as a stand alone. Although, I would suggest reading the others in the series first. With that said, reading this first does not take away from the previous stories. Well written with intrigue,a cliff hanger, suspense, romance, passion, secrets, and the power of love. Join Lady Lydia Prewitt and Lord Jason Lockwood on a journey of scandal, gossip that destroys lives, loneliness, and did I mention passion. Jason scarred both inside and out after a fight with is bastard half brother, labeled a lunatic, engages in debauchery,he has been shunned by the ton,but with all this said, can Lady Lydia change his life and his loneliness? Lady Lydia,is also lonely, she lives with her aunt, who has her collecting gossip, for her aunt is just plain hateful and evil....until Jason enters her life. All bets are off! A wonderful fast read! Does have a bit of a cliff-hanger. Jason's half brother, Ethan, story is next, and I can hardly wait. So many questions, I need answers to. I do wish this story had a epilogue, but atlas it does not. A very interesting storyline with engaging characters. Although, I would love to kick Margaret, Lydia's aunt a few times. If you enjoy historical romance with a twist or two, than "Never Seduce a Scoundrel" is the story for you to read. Received for an honest review from the publisher and Net Galley.

When the beast leaves his lair… Labeled a lunatic and a reprobate, Lord Jason Lockwood finds solace in debauchery outside the realm of Polite Society. Scarred both inside and out, Jason can’t possibly hope to regain a place within the ton…until he meets an alluring and persuasive young lady. When she offers to help him reclaim respectability, he’s tempted not by the possibility of a better reputation, but by the lure of seduction. With her by his side, he not only sees what he’s been missing, but also how much he stands to lose. A beauty’s touch provokes his desire…
Lady Lydia Prewitt is everything a debutante should be: beautiful, dowried, and in possession of a sterling reputation. But Lydia’s former life as a gossip has ensured a lonely path. When the opportunity to assist the scandalous yet seductive Lord Lockwood gain entry into London’s best ballrooms, she glimpses a chance for a future she never dreamed of—if he’s willing to meet her halfway. But how can she risk falling in love with a scoundrel if it means joining him in exile?
Oh, I love this book! Ms. Burke is a wonderful writer. She had me hooked with all the plot twists. I could not stop reading it to find out what would happen next. My heart was breaking at how heartless Lydia’s Aunt Margret was. This is a must read book, I can’t wait for the next book to come out so I can find out Ethan’s story.
Jason has taken being shunned by the Ton by throwing vice parties. He Meets Lydia when they were both going to call on Lady Aldridge. Jason then showed up while Lydia was having Tea with Mrs. Lloyd-Jones. He finds that he is fascinated with Lydia because his scar does not frighten her. As the pair comes, closer, together Lydia is trying to help Jason return to polite society, they both realize that there are forces trying to draw them apart. Will love conquer all in the end?

Lord Jason Lockwood is a scarred and bitter recluse. His only pleasure is in the "vice" parties he periodically throws, where many of those in society who shun him by day, come, wearing masks, to join in the debauchery. Lady Lydia Prewitt is going on her sixth season since her debut and is forced by her nefarious aunt to ferret out items of gossip that the aunt can then, in turn, use against her victims. Her aunt is physically and mentally abusive and threatens to send her back home to her father in "the wilds" if she doesn't do her bidding. Lydia is desperate and afraid she will never find love. Jason and Lydia form an alliance to bring him back into proper society and hopefully she will be able to find a mate. It doesn't take long for the sparks to fly and the two to tumble into love. Overall, I enjoyed this story, although the ending felt a little abrupt. It could have benefitted with an epilogue to bring a more satisfactory closing. Was this review helpful?
