Where can you find a book that has a hysterical elephant, a little boy, and a mailman all in one? Right here, of course! Never Mail an Elephant, by Mike Thaler, is a sure to be an all-time favorite for adults and children. In this book, there are characters with names like Dilly Dumpling and towns called Hi Ho, Ohio. With names like that in a book, who would be able to put it down? Exciting illustrations, provided by Jerry Smarth, are sure to keep anyone riveted. A boy around age five tries to mail an elephant to his cousin Dilly Dumpling, but he has a difficult time with the task. After buying tons of wrapping paper, a huge ball of string, and pages and pages of stamps, he finally gets around to getting the elephant. By the time the boy wraps the elephant in wrapping paper, winds him with string, pastes the stamps all over him, and has finally gotten him the post office, the elephant has had enough. The elephant has a fit and runs back to the boy¿s house. So the boy does the next best thing he can do; he ties a big pink bow around the elephant and rides it next door to Dilly¿s house. I thought the body of the story was strong and well worded, while the ending was humorous and predictable. From reading the story, you could predict the ending and what was going to happen to the elephant. Adults will think it is ¿stupid¿ that the boy went through all that trouble to mail an elephant, while it is only traveling next door. But children love that kind of ending, but young ones might not be able to grasp the humorous ending. Children ranging in ages under seven might not take hold of the amusing ending, but are sure to be intrigued by the wonderful pictures. Never Mail an Elephant is a timeless children¿s book which should be read and enjoyed by all.
