Editorial Reviews

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"Applegate’s writing is strong and lively, and the short sentences, funny situations, and frequent appearance of pictures will make this series an easy sell to novice readers."
Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books
“Applegate’s writing is strong and lively, and the short sentences, funny situations, and frequent appearance of pictures will make this series an easy sell to novice readers.”
Children's Literature - Laura Backman
This is story number seven in Katherine Applegate's series of "Roscoe Riley Rules." Roscoe introduces himself to the reader from his time-out chair. He gives an honest retelling of how he came to be in his latest predicament. If Roscoe guesses the weight of a giant pumpkin, he will win books for his school library—and a lot of candy for himself. But when a little black cat keeps trying to cross his path, Roscoe's superstitious nature gets him into plenty of trouble. This book might remind the reader of Junie B. Jones, but the author does a wonderful job of giving Roscoe his own unique voice or "kidspeak" and humorous adventures. Kids can connect to Roscoe, his mishaps, and his innocent way of looking at the world. Applegate's story is action packed and would motivate even the most reluctant of readers. This book stands on its own but once finished, readers will be clamoring to read all of the books in the "Roscoe Riley Rules" series. Reviewer: Laura Backman

Meet the Author

Katherine Applegate’s many books include the Roscoe Riley Rules chapter book series, the picture book The Buffalo Storm, and the award-winning novel Home of the Brave. With her husband, Michael Grant, she wrote the hugely popular series Animorphs, which has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide.

Katherine was inspired to write The One and Only Ivan after reading about the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, the Shopping Mall Gorilla. The real Ivan lived alone in a tiny cage for twenty-seven years at a shopping mall before being moved to Zoo Atlanta after a public outcry. He is now a beloved celebrity at the zoo, which houses the nation’s largest collection of western lowland gorillas. Ivan is well known for his paintings, which he “signs” with a thumb-print.

Katherine lives in California with her husband and two children.

Everything Goes is a series of books written and illustrated by Brian Biggs. The first books in the series, Everything Goes: On Land and Everything Goes: In the Air, are a celebration of cars, trucks, motorcycles, planes, and other things that go!
