Overview

The essential signatures of post-Pantera metal are in abundance on Lamb of God's inaugural album (though they had issued a disc under the name Burn the Priest). A veritable cornucopia of double picking and double-kick drumming, New American Gospel provides a mighty oak from which gritty American metal's faith is maintained, effectively bridging the '90s insistence upon drill-sergeant technicality and the old-school's determined focus on riff construction. Both kick and snare beats are as insistent as pneumatic drilling, and beyond that, they are diamond-precise, riveted flawlessly into place by Steve Austin's Today Is the Day drum-heavy production. Lamb of God plays a brand of heavy -- emphasis on heavy -- metal not unlike Meshuggah after having jettisoned some of their mathematical insistence. What elevates this Richmond, VA, quintet's assault above the majority of modern metal is the attention given to constructing definite melody and complete songs; Lamb of God are a creative act who are generally subordinated by most metallers in the pursuit of heaviness. They pursue both here tastefully, in proper balance. [New American Gospel

I got As the Palaces Burn last year and loved it, then I bought Ashes of the Wake when it came out and thought it was even better. When I finally got around to buying this one (their first CD) and listened to it, I was amazed. This is one of the best albums I have heard; ever. Every song is hard and amazingly fast. I couldn't believe that their first CD would be this good. Crushing guitars and lightning fast drums perfectly match Randy's throated growls throughout every song. I would name a few of the best songs but all of them are awesome. This could be a "Greatest Hits" album for Lamd of God. It is really THAT good. If you don't have this CD, and you like Lamb of God...GET IT NOW. This CD is worth every penny of your money. But beware, it's for metal fans only.
