Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
The Hammond is attractive, interesting, and easy to use. It is mildly disappointing when compared to Oxford's Concise Atlas of the World or Goode's World Atlas. Despite the large index, there are gaps in coveragefor example, no maps of northern, western or southern Australia. Also, it's often hard to read across the page gutters. Though an excellent atlas for the price, it's not the first choice in this category.
Booknews
Vastly improving the accuracy and clarity of previous Hammond atlases, this comprehensive atlas (9.75x13.25"), positioned between Hammond's top-of-the-line Atlas of the World and the smaller Explorer, Odyssey, and New Headlines titles, shows both new political boundaries as well as the earth's natural terrain, employing hypsometric-tinted mapping, a method that indicates ranges of elevation with varying bands of color (hypsometric tints). The map section is organized with comparative thematic maps at the beginning of each continent section, followed by large-scale, detailed maps of the region. There is also a wealth of related reference material, and a 45,000-entry master index. Paper edition (unseen), $19.95. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
