Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The breadth of information contained in this colorful encyclopedia (there are more than 4,000 entries) make it worthy of any child's desk. Broad categories like “Space,” “Living World,” “Culture,” and “The Human Body” are explored through detail-rich subsections accompanied by plenty of photographs, drawings and diagrams. Overarching questions such as “What is government?” provide comprehensible examination of difficult concepts with plenty of cues to launch additional exploration into the extensive range of topics. Ages 7–up. (July)
School Library Journal
K-Gr 6—Boasting over 4000 entries and 2500 brightly detailed illustrations and photographs, this resource is a must-have for any collection serving children. A two-page introduction explains how data is organized—entries are divided into 10 broad categories, among them "Space," "Culture," "History and Politics," and "The Human Body." The amount of information presented for each topic is just right, and a cross-reference icon ensures positive results for novice researchers. The book is a particularly good fit for ESL students and visual learners, as time lines, definitions, fast facts ("Flattened out, a pair of lungs would cover a tennis court"), maps, collections (e.g., a complete catalog of national flags), and short blocks of text fill every page to its fullest. This is a print reference work to rival the graphics-laden resources available electronically. It won't sit on the shelf.—Christina Connolly, Clark University, Worcester, MA

    Disappointed!

I was looking for a great encyclopedia for my 3rd grader. I purchased this online and although the wonderful pictures and layout looked great on the website, I was quickly disappointed once it arrived. I was shocked from the very first page, how much this book is steeped in evolution, global warming, etc. In my mind an encyclopedia should give FACTS about a given subject, NOT opinions. It should state that evolution is a THEORY, not a FACT, because it has NEVER been proven. The same for global warming. Although my kids have learned about these ideas, we have always stressed that these are opinions and theories. These ideas and worldview dominate the whole book and are interwoven throughout many of the articles. If this is what our children are learning as FACTS, no wonder our society is so far off base. I am returning this to the store to find another encyclopedia that allows my child to learn about something and then be able to form their own ideas and opinions.

    Gorgeous pictures!

This is a great children's encyclopedia with lots of information and tons of beautiful pictures that will really help kids understand the concept better, and would also be great to use for science reports, etc.
