2010 Hardcover New 9781920744540. Flawless copy, brand new, pristine, never opened--256 pages; 600 color illustrations. Description: " 'Robert Adam: The Search for a Modern ... Classicism' examines the work of Robert Adam, director of the largest traditional architectural firm in Europe, ADAM Architecture. Turning to traditional design in the early 1970s, when it was unfashionable, Adam was granted a scholarship at the British School at Rome. In the following years his research, studies and writing backed up his growing portfolio of classical and traditional projects. He became one of the major spokesmen for the emerging body of traditional designers in the UK and abroad in the 1980s, defending and promoting traditional design in the face of savage opposition from the modernist architectural establishment. At the same time, he developed a unique position by drawing from the entire classical tradition-from ancient Greece to the 1930s-in a search for continuing relevance and modernity. Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A crusader of classical styles who now directs the ADAM Architecture firm in the UK, Robert Adam is also known for his popular Classical Architecture: A Comprehensive Handbook. In this celebratory appreciation of Adam's designs and completed projects, John (architecture, Univ. of Miami; editor, The Classicist) also promotes works by fellow ADAM directors including Hugh Petter, Nigel Anderson, and Paul Hanvey. Buildings and projects are grouped by type—commercial, residential, urban design and master planning, public (including Oxford's Sackler Library)—and, along with discussions of their programs and architectural traits, feature photos, drawings, floor plans, elevations, and ornamental and decorative details. Adam's fluency in synthesizing different idioms, from Romanesque and baroque to Greek revival, Arts and Crafts, and American Beaux-Arts is truly astonishing. VERDICT Although insistent, even proselytizing in tone and largely uncritical, the work will appeal to architectural revivalists for the depth of its treatment of Adam's manifold UK projects, which are enthusiastically endorsed by Britain's Prince Charles in the foreword.—Russell T. Clement, Northwestern Univ. Lib., Evanston, IL
