Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A crusader of classical styles who now directs the ADAM Architecture firm in the UK, Robert Adam is also known for his popular Classical Architecture: A Comprehensive Handbook. In this celebratory appreciation of Adam's designs and completed projects, John (architecture, Univ. of Miami; editor, The Classicist) also promotes works by fellow ADAM directors including Hugh Petter, Nigel Anderson, and Paul Hanvey. Buildings and projects are grouped by type—commercial, residential, urban design and master planning, public (including Oxford's Sackler Library)—and, along with discussions of their programs and architectural traits, feature photos, drawings, floor plans, elevations, and ornamental and decorative details. Adam's fluency in synthesizing different idioms, from Romanesque and baroque to Greek revival, Arts and Crafts, and American Beaux-Arts is truly astonishing. VERDICT Although insistent, even proselytizing in tone and largely uncritical, the work will appeal to architectural revivalists for the depth of its treatment of Adam's manifold UK projects, which are enthusiastically endorsed by Britain's Prince Charles in the foreword.—Russell T. Clement, Northwestern Univ. Lib., Evanston, IL
