Other students yearn for state football or cheerleading championships, the kids at Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, California have their eyes set on a different prize. Like thousands of other teenagers around the world, they are working tirelessly to win the annual FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science & Technology) Robotics contest. The competition from Silicon Valley and other fast track schools, but the Dos Pueblos teen techies have one great advantage: Their mentor is Amir Abo-Shaeer, the first high school teacher to ever win a prestigious MacArthur Award. Timed to coincide with beginning of FIRST's 2011 season, Neal Bascomb's The New Cool tracks one intense sport in which head-to-head competition is done without helmets.
