Editorial Reviews

KLIATT - Janis Flint-Ferguson
The popularity of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series has led to many a discussion about vampires, werewolves, and falling in love with them. There have been polls and surveys regarding who is the better boyfriend, Edward or Jacob. Not to mention a new interest in Forks, Washington, a very real place that is the setting for the series. The novels and the discussions involve more than just the YA set: many women of all ages have read, enjoyed and debated the novels along with their daughters, sons and students. Ellen Hopkins, with Leah Wilson, has edited a collection of essays that take a closer look at this phenomenon. Eight writers have weighed in on the popularity of the series and the cultural and social implications of a novel about vampires and the teens next door. Hopkins begins the collection with her own confession about not wanting to read a vampire book, but being drawn in nonetheless. Several articles look at Edward and the comparisons with both sociopaths and the "bad" boy every good girl fantasizes about. Ellen Steiber, in one of the best of the essays, places the Twilight series in the canon of vampire literature, tracing the historical significance of vampire stories and what they say about the culture from which they emerge. James A. Owen, who supplies the lone male perspective, develops his thesis that the series is a romance, explaining how and why it so convincingly falls into that category. Because the collection came before the publication of the final Twilight novel, there is no discussion of how the series concludes, but that does not take away from the rich and witty perspectives—historical, literary and personal— represented in this collection.Reviewer: Janis Flint-Ferguson

Look out TWILIGHT fans, there's something new to sink your teeth into.

A NEW DAWN is a book full of many authors' essays, all about the TWILIGHT saga. You may think, wow, a book of reviews and essays, that sounds boring. It actually has some great analyses from some great authors. This book talks about many different topics you might or might not have even thought of while reading the series.

One interesting topic is how different the thought of vampires has changed over the years. Our society used to think of vampires as horrible creatures; now they are thought of as normal citizens in our day-to-day life. That is just one subject out of many that is brought up.

Personally, I loved this book. I absolutely adored the TWILIGHT saga, so reading A NEW DAWN was very interesting. I got a great viewpoint from many perspectives and that was the best part. I highly recommend reading it if you want to get a little deeper view on TWILIGHT, NEW MOON, ECLIPSE, and BREAKING DAWN.
