Overview

The dream of their own farmstead and a good life in America had brought Roald and Ingeborg Bjorklund across the Atlantic to pioneer the virgin prairie of Dakota Territory. But Roald's tragic disappearance in a winter storm had turned Ingeborg's dreams into a living nightmare. Against nearly impossible circumstances and overwhelming grief, she struggles to keep the farm and her family together.

When spring appears, Roald's distant cousin Haaken arrives to help with the heavy field work, and Ingeborg is able to once again concentrate her efforts on home and children. After the bleak winter, she cannot ignore the joy that Haaken brings to their lives or the attraction she begins to feel toward him. When Roald's brother from Norway also arrives to help the family, things become very complicated around the simple prairie dwelling!

He reminded her of a Viking of old--
could he be persuaded to stay?

All of the Red River Series books are excellent. Especially this one! If you like pioneer type stories you will love these. You become part of the family and can hardly wait to read the next book. This series goes on to the Return to Red River...This is my second time to read the series and can't believe how much I am enjoying them again.

I am working my way through Ms. Snelling's Red River of the North series. I am enjoying following the different characters and their interaction. Ms. Snelling has researched her stories well; details and descriptions of the geography allow you to get into the story. Living in ND I find it a good piece of the state's early history. It's easy to follow and at times I have difficulty putting it down. The length of the chapters is good and I like how she goes back and forth between different plots and story lines, leaving you suspended as to what will come next. I highly recommend this book and the others in this series. I'm already on the third book, A Land to Call Home," and I plan to read all the books in this series; maybe even beyond!

Reading about the 1800's is exciting and gives a new vision of how difficult it must have been to live through those times.Adding the life of a dynamic family like the Bjorklands makes it double exciting. Great series of books of an immigrant family through generations of loss, struggle, love, generosity and most of all faith. Well worth your time for multiple ages!

I really like this series. Lauraine tells about the good times as well as the struggles of the characters. She makes it more real because like real people, these characters face very challenging times in their lives. What I really like is the way the characters figure out that they need God to be first in their lives no matter what comes their way.

I loved this book and am now reading the 5th book in the series. It was easy reading and kept my attention through all the books. I would highly recommend it for anyone wanting to see what it was like living in Dakota  in the 1800's. Great author
