Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Josie Martin Bowman, RN, MSN, PhD (East Carolina University )
Description: This book examines aspects of a woman's general health throughout the life span incorporating contributing factors that affect the individual's health and well being. Ethical, legal, political, economic, and psychosocial issues are covered.
Purpose: The purpose is to present information about the health of all women regardless of age, race, socioeconomic status, and culture throughout the life span. In addition factors that affect health are examined such as health promotion and prevention, public policy, and clinical interventions. This is an excellent addition to the literature about women's health throughout the life span, including discussions of special poulations. Each chapter focuses on different topics of relevance including both a focus on health and on illness or disease.
Audience: The audience can include students studying women's health or practitioners. It can be used by students to gain new knowledge and practitioners to refresh knowledge. The book would be of interest to anyone concerned with women's health. In the preface, the authors address the use of the book by students and their instructors. All three authors have many years of experience in the area of women's health and are credible authoriites on the subject.
Features: The book begins with a discussion of developmental stages, mental health, and occupational health. Next, the focus is on nutrition and weight management, exercise, substance abuse, and violence. The third area of focus is sexual health including childbirth and menopause. The authors also discuss cardiovascular disease as it relates to women and chronic disease. Each discussion is enhanced by coverage of research in that area, cultural differences, and a section on informed decision making. There is also a web site link for further information for the reader. A glossary of terms is located at the end of the book. Tables highlight specific areas of interest or strategies. The one shortcoming is the lack of color in the illustrations — all photos are black and white and the headings and tables are another color.
Assessment: This book presents a good discussion of issues related to women's health and would be useful for students studying women's health.
