Editorial Reviews

Noel Chavez
This book presents an overview of women's health from a personal decision-making perspective. It examines health issues across the life cycle, considering epidemiological, historical, psychosocial, cultural, legal/ethical, political, and economic issues for each. The focus is on presenting a comprehensive view of women's health and its issues within a framework of personal decision-making. Although disease entities are covered (i.e., cancer, heart disease), the overall emphasis is one of health promotion/disease prevention rather than one of pathology. Topics considered new to women's health, such as violence, abuse, and harassment, are also included. The book is intended for students of women's studies, health education, nursing, and other related disciplines, and it is appropriate for advanced undergraduates or master's level students; it would also be a quick reference for health professionals. The book is structured for a one-semester course. The credits indicate that the authors are national leaders in women's health. Information boxes with key points and short individual women's quotes make reading easier and interesting. Graphs, charts, and figures are well drawn and labeled, and the photographs are appropriately used. Each chapter presents philosophical issues for discussion or reflection, references, and resources. This book provides a good overview of current, important issues in a readable yet comprehensive manner, and it would be informative for professionals in translating technical information for consumers. The personal decision-making focus used in the text reflects current health education thinking, which when used by college women could positively affect personal healthpractices.
From The Critics
Reviewer: Josie M. Bowman, DSN (East Carolina University )
Description: This book examines aspects of a woman's general health throughout the life span incorporating contributing factors that affect the individual's health and well being. Ethical, legal, political, economic, and psychosocial issues are covered.
Purpose: The purpose is to present information about the health of all women regardless of age, race, socioeconomic status, and culture throughout the life span. In addition factors that affect health are examined such as health promotion and prevention, public policy, and clinical interventions. This is an excellent addition to the literature about women's health throughout the life span, including discussions of special poulations. Each chapter focuses on different topics of relevance including both a focus on health and on illness or disease.
Audience: The audience can include students studying women's health or practitioners. It can be used by students to gain new knowledge and practitioners to refresh knowledge. The book would be of interest to anyone concerned with women's health. In the preface, the authors address the use of the book by students and their instructors. All three authors have many years of experience in the area of women's health and are credible authoriites on the subject.
Features: The book begins with a discussion of developmental stages, mental health, and occupational health. Next, the focus is on nutrition and weight management, exercise, substance abuse, and violence. The third area of focus is sexual health including childbirth and menopause. The authors also discuss cardiovascular disease as it relates to women and chronic disease. Each discussion is enhanced by coverage of research in that area, cultural differences, and a section on informed decision making. There is also a web site link for further information for the reader. A glossary of terms is located at the end of the book. Tables highlight specific areas of interest or strategies. The one shortcoming is the lack of color in the illustrations:all photos are black and white and the headings and tables are another color.
Assessment: This book presents a good discussion of issues related to women's health and would be useful for students studying women's health.
Overviews women's health from historical, epidemiological, sociocultural, and clinical perspectives. After an introductory section, sections cover lifestyle and social, personal and sexual, and lifespan dimensions of women's health. Learning features include discussion questions, boxes on taking responsibility for health, Internet exercises, and profiles of leaders in women's health. This second edition contains new chapters on occupational health, the developmental life span of women, and mental health. Three chapters on substance abuse are now combined into one chapter. Alexander is president and CEO of The American Social Health Association. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
