Overview

There's a whole new set of rules to learn when you're the new girl!

When you are starting at a brand-new school, you have to wear something good.

Allie Finkle's starting her first day of school at Pine Heights Elementary! Plus, she's getting a new kitten, the first pick of show cat Lady Serena Archibald's litter!

But being the New Girl is turning out to be scary, too, especially since one of the girls in Allie's new class -- Rosemary -- doesn't like her. In fact, Rosemary says she's going to beat Allie up after school.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It's always difficult and stressful for a young girl to start her first day at elementary school. It is not any different for Allie Finkle in this second book of "The New Girl" series. Allie has her hands full in this tale, not only because she is starting her first day at Pine Heights Elementary School but also because she is getting a new kitten. In addition, Allie runs into problems when one of the girls in her new class, named Rosemary, decides she doesn't like Allie. What's worse is that Rosemary even threatens to beat up Allie after school. This book is a charmer that any child can relate to. The chapter titles alone would draw a child into reading this book, from "Rule #1: When You Are Starting Your First Day Ever at a Brand New School, You Have to Wear Something Good, So people Will Think You're Nice," through "Rule #4: When Someone Decides She's Going to Beat You Up, the Best Thing to Do is Hide," the reader is drawn into the routine problems of kids this age. A winner. Reviewer: Joan Elste

Meg Cabot

MEG CABOT’S many series and books for adults, teens, and tweens have included multiple #1 New York Times bestsellers and have sold more than fifteen million copies worldwide. Her Princess Diaries series has been published in more than thirty-eight countries and was made into two hit films by Disney. Meg also wrote the New York Times bestselling Mediator, Airhead, and Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls series, Insatiable, as well as the award-winning novels All-American Girl and Avalon High. Meg lives in Key West with her husband and two cats. Visit Meg online at megcabot.com.

Biography

Meg Cabot knows that one of the best cures for feeling gawky and conspicuous is reading about someone who sticks out even more than you do. Her books for young adults invariably feature girls who have extraordinary powers that carry extraordinary burdens. Cabot's Princess Diaries series offers up the secret thoughts of Mia Thermopolis, who discovers at age 14 that she is actually the princess of a small European country. This revelation adds significantly to her extant concerns about crushes, friendships, school, and other matters falling under adolescent scrutiny.

Cabot, a native of Indiana weaned on Judy Blume and Barbara Cartland, was already a successful romance novelist (as Patricia Cabot) before she began writing for young adults; her alter-alter ego, Jenny Carroll, began a new series shortly after The Princess Diaries debuted. The Carroll books are divided between the Mediator series, starring a girl who can communicate with restless ghosts; and the 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU books, in which a girl struck by lightning acquires the ability to locate missing people.

Cabot writes her books in a conspiratorial, first-person style that resonates with her readers. She has obviously kept a grip on the vernacular and the key issues of adolescence; but what makes her books so irresistible is the mixing of the mundane with the fantastic. After all, who wouldn't like to wake up and be a princess all of a sudden, or a seer? Cabot takes such offhand notions and roots them firmly in the details of average, middle-class American life. She has also tiptoed into mystery and paranormal suspense with other YA novels and series installments.

Cabot continues to write adult novels under various permutations of her given name (Meggin Patricia Cabot): from 19th-century historical romances to contemporary chick lit. And, as with her books for teens, these romances have earned praise for their lighthearted humor and well drawn characters.

Good To Know

Some interesting outtakes from our interview with Cabot:

"I am left handed."

"I hate tomatoes of any kind."

"I really wanted to be veterinarian, but I got a 410 on my math SATs."

"Writing used to be my hobby, but now that it's my job, I have no hobby -- except watching TV and laying around the pool reading US Weekly. I have tried many hobbies, such as knitting, Pilates, ballet, yoga, and guitar, but none of them have taken. So I guess I'm stuck with no hobby.

After having moved with her family to a new neighborhood in a slightly creepy old house, Allie is the "New Girl" at Pine Heights Elementary.

Being the New Girl isn't all that easy. Sure, she's made some great new friends and she loves her new teacher. She even gets to go home for lunch because her house is only two blocks away from school. But there is a girl in her class, Rosemary, who isn't so fond of Allie and even threatens to beat her up. Allie keeps getting advice from everyone about what do about the whole Rosemary situation, but she has no idea which thing is the right thing.

During all of this school drama, Allie is also worrying about her future kitten, Mewsette. The mother of her kitten gave birth to her litter early, so all the little kitties are premature.

Poor Allie, what's a New Girl to do?

Awww, this was a really cute second book to the ALLIE FINKLE'S RULES FOR GIRLS series. I loved it! I'm happy Ms. Cabot started writing for younger readers. My cousin is going to love this when I give it to her for her birthday next month. Definitely have your little sisters (or even little brothers) check it out. Hopefully, they'll like it -- Allie is such a fun girl!

    This book rocks!

This book rocks!! I read this book and thought it was a very fast read. I think it is pergect for anybody starting at 3rd grade. Allie has some of the best rules. But some of them are kind of wierd. This book I would recommend it to mostly girls. If you are thinking about getting this book get it. It is NOT a waste of money. I love Allie she is such a nice girl and would make a best friend with anybody. Her friends she makes in this book are better, more miture, noncrybaby, best friends then Mary Kay ever was. They all have an active and wild imagination. Join the world of Allie Finkle at her new school in, Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls Moving Day.
