Children's Literature - Amanda MacGregor
Almost anything a person could want to know about New Hampshire can be found in this volume of "America the Beautiful, Third Series." The initial chapter covers topography, geography, climate, and plant and animal life. Subsequent chapters examine topics such as the people of New Hampshire, from its first inhabitants and the Algonquians to explorers and settlers; industrialization and the increasing importance of farming, textiles, and railways; and its popularity, especially among the wealthy, as a vacation spot. The author then segues into modern times by looking at New Hampshire's population, its vernacular (words like "wicked" "cellar" and "supper"), education, arts, and sports teams. Other chapters discuss government, the economy, and travel, complete with recommendations on what to see and do. Charts, graphs, maps, and many photographs and illustrations are mixed in with the text. Sidebars crop up on nearly every page, either helping to explain a photograph, presenting a mini-biography of famous New Hampshire residents, or answering frequently asked questions. The unique facet of this series is the extensive back matter. In this section called "The Project Room," readers will find ideas for writing, art, science, and math projects related to New Hampshire. Other information presented here includes a time line, glossary, fast facts, lyrics to the state song, listings of scenic sites, annual events, and much more. Although there is a phenomenal amount of information packed into each visually frenetic page, the many subheadings and a small table of contents at the start of each chapter highlighting major topics for quick reference make this thorough book easy to use.
