I found the Standard Full Color Bible (NIV version) while browsing in my local Barnes & Noble store. It looked interesting, so I brought it into the in-store Cafe and decided to check it out over a mocha. First reaction -- wow! As an artist, I'm a very visually-oriented person and very much enjoy color, so my attention span is often stretched to the limit while reading traditional, black-and-white text Bibles. Not this one! Different subject categories are represented by a system of twelve different colors, each color shading its corresponding portion of Scripture. For example, passages relating to Love are shaded in green (the Love category including joy, kindness, mercy, comfort, sympathy, and other manifestations of love); Family (along with genealogies, marriage, home, friendships, etc) is represented in yellow; Faith (along with prayer, courage, repentance, hope, etc) is shown in orange, and so on. This Bible includes a bookmark showing all the colors and categories, which is VERY helpful because you can instantly pull it out and refer to it as you read. The color system is also explained at the front of the Bible. Additionally, words spoken by God are underlined, making it even easier to distinguish what you are reading. As I sat reading in the B&N Cafe that first day, it didn't take long at all to "get" the system and be drawn into it. The more you read, the more you WANT to read. The color system helps the reader connect with God's loving heart by seeing so many of the different human emotions and aspects of the human experience in light of the Christian experience and the long and complex fabric of history. It gives even the long-time Bible reader new perspectives on Holy Scripture and engages the reader in ways he or she might not have imagined. It's hard to describe -- it really must be experienced. And as if all that weren't enough, there are also full-color maps right in the text, as well as some of the most detailed back-of-Bible color maps I've ever seen. Book introductions are complete but succinct, so as to keep the reader's attention and to build excitement for each new book of God's inspired Word. Additional back-of-Bible features include a full-color "Popular Bible Quotations" section, arranged day by day for devotional use and memorization, daily and one-year Bible reading calendars, a subject guide, and an index to maps. Adding to the appeal and beauty of this Bible is a gorgeous vine design on the cover (this review refers to the 'tu-tone' cover). This Bible easily fits in the size XL Bible case I have. I'll also add that my fortysomething eyes have no trouble with the print size. Once I sat down in that Cafe with this Bible, I didn't want to let it go. It came home with me that day, I read it every day, and when I go back to that favorite Cafe to have another mocha and enjoy the ambiance, it comes back with me. (I keep the receipt in my purse, so there are no questions.) This is definitely a companion you'll want to linger over and spend quality devotional time with, at home, at your favorite cafe, or anywhere you want to be inspired. Highly recommended.
