Children's Literature
Capstone Press's new "Fact Finders: The American Colonies" books feature short sentence structure and an appealing layout, making the series accessible to younger readers. Unlike other "state books" available for student research, this short, 32- page book focuses on the time period from exploration to statehood with chapters such as "New Jersey's First People," "Colonial Life" and "Becoming a State." Fast Facts, a Time Line (1676-1787), a glossary, an index, and a short list of additional books about New Jersey are included at the end of the text. Words defined in the glossary are printed in bold. Illustrations include historical paintings, a picture of the original money used in New Jersey, as well as maps and charts. James Lewis, a librarian from the New Jersey Historical Society, is listed as a consultant. This is a strong choice for school and public libraries needing to supplement their New Jersey history collection for young readers. 2006, Capstone Press, Ages 8 to 12.—Augusta Scattergood
