Overview

New Jersey is ... a gem. Rich in beauty and rich in history, the Garden State has proven itself special through the years. This state is a place of extremes, including the largest seaport in the United States and the most diners. It draws people from all over the world to live and to visit. In fact, New Jersey is the most densely populated American state, averaging thirteen times more people per square mile than the national average. These people have brought with them their cultures, their talents, and their dreams. They have shaped the way of life in New Jersey just as they have shaped the soil, and they have made New Jersey the great state it is today.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Wendy Pollock-Gilson
As a librarian and a former fourth grade teacher, I wish this book had been available when the fourth grade students were assigned their annual reports on the United States and New Jersey. The information is all here, making it a practical and attractive addition to your United States collection for children. Geography, history, government and economy, plus landmarks are included. Students making brochures and maps can get everything they need to complete their project and then pass it on to the next waiting kid. Additional book and Internet resources as well as an index are provided. Full color photographs and easily read maps complement the clear text. Part of the "Celebrate the States" series.
Children's Literature - Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
Part of the "Celebrate the States" series, this book introduces readers to everything New Jersey. The book takes us through the geography, history, people, government, and economy of the Garden State. The narrative is detailed and written toward the upper end of the age range of likely readers, with fairly advanced sentence structure and vocabulary. Most pages also include photographs, maps, illustrations, and charts. Each chapter also offers sidebars with shorter text and more photographs. One of the most engaging chapters is the "Garden State Tour," which gives readers a real flavor of the state. The photographs in this chapter are of roller coasters, the Living History Farm, a rodeo, and Lucy, the oldest example of animal architecture in the United States. This is an example of the combination of more simple facts and the feel of New Jersey. The book also includes numerous lists of facts, short biographies of state stars, fun facts, and resources for more information. Reviewer: Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
