Overview

The political campaign is one of the most important and least understood organizations in contemporary political life. Looking at evidence from ethnographic immersion, survey data, and social network analysis, Howard (communications, U. of Washington) examines the evolving act of political campaigning and the changing organization of campaigns over five election cycles, from 1996 to 2004. In that time the typical political campaign has adopted digital technologies that improve reach and fundraising and also adapted its organizational behavior. The new system of producing political culture, Howard argues, has important implications for the meaning of citizenship and the basis of representation.
