New Music for Bowed Piano

Barnes & Noble - Ken Smith
Hearing the 1996 CD of Stephen Scott's musical epic VIKINGS OF THE SUNRISE was like finding John Cage's and Henry Cowell's piano experimentations morphed into a mature musical vocabulary. Hearing the 1996 CD of Stephen Scott's musical epic VIKINGS OF THE SUNRISE was like finding John Cage's and Henry Cowell's piano experimentations morphed into a mature musical vocabulary. Not just bowed but plucked and pounded, a single acoustic piano surrounded by an ensemble of specialist performers produced live acoustic music as trippy as any electronica. It was a huge leap from the Cage and Cowell generation, and this recording, now released on CD for the first time, shows Scott's intermediate steps. "Music One for Bowed Strings" 1977 explores not just the drones and long sustained tones that bowing technique allows, but also a staccato style similar to the violin family's. "Music Three" 1979 expands that technique both structurally and harmonically, while "Rainbows I and II" 1981 stretches those techniques into the epic sweep that points to his later VIKINGS. The only problem is the title: The "newest" piece on this recording is from 1983; the collection would more accurately be called "Etudes for New Age Piano," inspiring more performers and composers to follow Scott's inspired lead.
