Description: The book describes the process of transitioning from nursing student to entering the workforce for the first time. Topics range from being a new graduate to finding a first job to how to survive as a new nurse. The author also notes that despite the reported nursing shortage, those in the profession are not seeing it, due to nurses coming out of retirement.
Purpose: The purpose is to help new graduate nurses prepare for the work force and maintain a high level of care. It is a stepping stone between graduation and orientation to a facility, giving new graduates information that will prove useful when entering into practice.
Audience: The book is written for nurses who are getting ready to graduate and head out into the workforce.
Features: This is an overview of the transition from nursing school student to nursing school graduate, covering topics such as how to secure that first nursing position, how to prioritize in nursing, and how to apply and be prepared for that first nursing job. The author also explores topics such as priority setting, patient safety, and cultural sensitivity, important topics for new graduates.
Assessment: As a nursing faculty member, I found the book informative, interesting, and just a pleasure to read. There is a lot of useful information for the new graduate nurse.
