New Orleans was one of the first cities to embrace street railways, and the city's love affair with streetcars has never ceased. New Orleans: The Canal Streetcar Line showcases photographs, diagrams, and maps that detail the rail line from its origin and golden years, its decline and disappearance for almost 40 years, and its return to operation. From the French Quarter to the cemeteries, the Canal Line ran through the heart of the city and linked the Creole Faubourgs with the new neighborhoods that stretched to Lake Pontchartrain.

Well documented and researched on the transit system of New Orleans, pictures of various models of streetcars that had been in use on various sections of the city. Many lines (routes) used only one model on their systems, but all interchanged at Canal Street.
At one time, this was the most affordable, convenient and quickest way to get around the city and its suburbs, you could go completely around most of the city on one fare, using the transfer system and the various lines.
I often would take out of town visitors for a ride on the streetcars as they covered the entire city in a very complete web of lines, and the scenery was always changing with the neighborhoods of N.O.
Not just a documentary on the types of equipment in usage, but of the development of the distinctive neighborhoods, made possible by this system. Additional information provided on historical events made possible by this city-wide transit system, more diverse than any other city in the country, similar to subway systems of N.Y.C., but above ground!
Overview
