    I Also Recommend:

    Outstanding Resource.

This work is a fantastic addition to any serious student of Scripture, whether looking for scholarly insight into the text and its background, or seeking religious inspiration. The text of the Bible itself, is in clear, understandable English (New Revised Standard Version), and includes the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), Apocrypha, and New Testament. It is not only the translations which make this an outstanding source, but also the copious notes which accompany the translations, cross-referenced to other areas of the Bible.
If this alone were not enough, the work also gives excellent introductions to each chapter, discussing authorship, background, and circumstances of the writing etc. While each of these introductions is scholarly and authoritative, they are not dry and pedantic. The writing is generally accessible and easy to read.
As frosting on the cake, the last sections (appendices) give excellent essays on the geography of the times, clearly illustrated maps, as well as historical analyses which put all these events into their chronology and give the reader some additional insight into the text, its milieu, and meaning. These essays are not dogmatic or opinionated, and do not promulgate any specific doctrine or point of view, but simply state objective facts. Where information is sparse or contradictory, it is clearly stated as such.
For both scholarly work and for those who want to get a deeper insight into their beliefs, this is a work I would highly recommend. It is an excellent example of balance between the intellectual and the inspirational - head and heart - knowledge and faith. I have found it awe inspiring.

    My Favorite Study Bible

Different study Bibles serve distinctive needs. Readers use them for many reasons. In a way, we might ask too much of them, but publishers work hard to fulfill the diverse needs and desires readers bring to their use of study Bibles.

I just upgraded my primary study Bible from the 2001 edition of this work to the Augmented 2007 edition. It was worth the cost. I have used Oxford Annotated Study Bibles (RSV and NRSV) since my parents gave me my first one for Christmas 1963. I used it as a text in my first university Bible course. I used to wear out one every two or three years. They have been my primary study Bibles for over 45 years.

The Oxford Annotated Augmented Study Bible with Apocrypha (NRSV) is the least theologically and ideologically driven study Bible I know. That is a boon as long as the reader understands the aims the editors sought to meet. This is a work based on literary and historical-critical methods of study. It includes special essays on canon formation in various traditions, the history of English translations of the Bible, and other important topics for understanding biblical studies. This work helps readers in small group study, college courses, and private study. It does not tell you what to think or believe but gives you ready background material and notes in one volume. The contributors come from a wide range of religious groups. They are all top-notch scholars.

The editors work hard to distinguish the way we read scripture from the points-of-view of different traditions. Extensive notes for the texts enrich reading. Carefully made notes enrich reading individual texts. Many denominations and individual scholars recommend the translation.

If you want theologically, canonically, or ideologically based study Bibles, you have many choices. This is a good work to help readers comprehend the basic groundwork texts for biblical study.

    Recommend in hardcover

I forgot to check to see if this was in hardcover before I made the transaction. It is large and heavy and somewhat difficult to handle in paperback, but other than that I love it!

Contains grotesque adult content, incl. genocide, rape, slavery, torture, and child abuse... Many of these atrocious acts are commandeered by authority figures. I reccomend reading this entire book, BEFORE deciding to share it with anyone.

Watch out - this book does not have the Apocrypha

I just received the book and it matches the writen product description that does not include Apocrypha. The picture is a graphic misrepresentation of the product being sold here.
