New Seeds Of Contemplation

( 10 )

Overview

In print for more than forty years, New Seeds of Contemplation has served as a guide to the contemplative life for several generations of spiritual seekers. The word contemplation is itself somewhat problematical, according to Thomas Merton: "It can become almost a magic word, or if not magic, then 'inspirational,' which is almost as bad." In this modern Christian classic, Merton reveals contemplation to be nothing other than "life itself, fully awake, fully active, fully aware that it is alive." The thirty-nine ...

Overview

In print for more than forty years, New Seeds of Contemplation has served as a guide to the contemplative life for several generations of spiritual seekers. The word contemplation is itself somewhat problematical, according to Thomas Merton: "It can become almost a magic word, or if not magic, then 'inspirational,' which is almost as bad." In this modern Christian classic, Merton reveals contemplation to be nothing other than "life itself, fully awake, fully active, fully aware that it is alive." The thirty-nine short "seeds" that make up this book are intended to awaken and cultivate the contemplative, mystical dimension of the spiritual path for everyone. New Seeds of Contemplation is a revised and expanded version of Merton's earlier book Seeds of Contemplation.

A much-enlarged and revised version of Seeds of Contemplation--one of the late Father Merton's most widely-read and best-loved works--New Seeds of Contemplation seeks to awaken the dormant inner depths of the spirit so long neglected by Western man and to nurture a deeply contemplative and mystical dimension in our spiritual lives. I Also Recommend:

Merton did for me about God what Chogyam Trungpa did for me about No God. New Seeds of Contemplation has turned me inward toward God. A gift I never conceived of ever happening to me.

Thomas Merton's passion for connecting with God is something I had never heard or read from anyone else. In New Seeds, his non-churchy writings pulled me to the depths of my own wonderings but had yet to put words to them. He gave me back a relationship with God in a meaningful presentation of what the contemplative life is. He connected with the black of despair and pulls you limp and feeble back into the light. For anyone who is really stuck in spiritual angst this may be just the ticket.

Previously I had read Seven Storey Mountain and became so excited at the prospect of monastic life, I was literally applying to convents. I identified so much the the exigency for the ineffable as Merton puts it. That drive to know God. I wished I could chuck it all and head for Gethsemani. Merton also connected with Buddhism and his Western perspective is so helpful in taking a deeper more confident stride onto the spiritual path.

For anyone feeling that there has to be more... Chogyam Trungpa will be a good way to unravel your spiritual materialism. And if you are still drawn to God, Merton will redefine that relationship so that you may begin again free of preconceived notions and ideas. Both authors rocked me to the core. The battle has been bloody but it is amazing where I am now. Blessings

    BrambleKill

BrambleKill pads in, into her new den. "This will do..." She sighs pausing for a moment, "This will do..." She curls up in the pitch black corner dozing off. The black tabby blends perfectly in with the night.
