Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
This revision of Mildred Nickel's Steps to Service (ALA, 1984; o.p.) provides basic information on establishing and maintaining a quality school library media center. Beginning with ideas for developing a mind-set and surviving the first week, Wasman offers practical, detailed suggestions for circulation, collection development, budgeting, and facilities management, as well as tips for handling the various personalities within a school system. Although this edition adds technology as a key component, most advice encompasses both automated and manual systems, large or small. Numerous sample forms and checklists highlight ways to simplify correspondence and documentation. Appendixes provide national goals, standards, and addresses for library-oriented organizations and accrediting agencies. There is little information, however, about Internet-use policies. Veteran professionals might appreciate this review of the rationale behind library policies and procedures, but the handbook works best as a solid overview for new school librarians, particularly those with a limited support system.-Debbie Johnson, Richardson West Junior High School, TX Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
