Children's Literature - Ellen R. Butts
The human brain is an amazing organ. The more we learn about it, the more amazing it seems. Dr. Davis is the author of more than 100 articles published in scientific books and journals. Her expertise and writing skills are evident in this book, and the contents are logically organized. She discusses how scientists use new imaging techniques for studying the brain, especially computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission technology (PET). She also describes how the various techniques work, including how data are processed, gathered and interpreted. Dr. Davis also looks into the future of brain exploration and its impact on society. She considers the new field of neuroethics, which asks such questions as "What if machines could read your mind"? or "What if the brain could be controlled from a distance"? A challenging and enlightening work, this book is not for beginners. Readers should already be familiar with the field of neuroscience and its terminology. Back matter includes a lengthy bibliography and index. It is part of the "Gray Matter" series. Reviewer: Ellen R. Butts
