This introductory text encourages readers to take a close, objective look at the New Testament. Striking just the right balance in presentation and information for students new to this subject, Freed prepares students to form their own analyses through his literary-critical approach and the pertinent insights he provides on the cultural and historical contexts of each passage. Incorporation of new scholarship and a variety of perspectives on controversial topics make this text and the process of studying the New Testament fresh and informed.

Editorial Reviews

Introductory text for students and other lay people who have had no formal training in NT studies avoids most of the technical language used in more advanced works, but with no loss in detail or authority. It helps the interested reader learn about and participate in the (non-denominational and non-doctrinaire) critical study of the NT. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (

An excellent introduction to the New Testament!

When I first started to read Professor Freed's text book I could not stop reading it until I was finished! Professor Freed has written a work that shall withstand the test of time! His work is very holistic in scope and shows many years of research, thought and consideration! He is one of the few authors that I have read who writes having a 'balenced' view of the subject! One of the things that I really enjoyed was when He translansliterated words or parts of scripture from the Koine and Septuagint Greek that is used in the New Testament! This text book to be 'fair and square' is just outstanding, I highly recommend it!
