New Testament Miracles

Overview

Some of the most dramatic moments of the New Testament occur when Jesus quite miraculously is able to take control of the forces of nature, restore sight to the blind, heal the sick, and bring the dead to life. Provocative and mysterious, the miracles of Jesus, and later of his disciples, have served as keen inspiration to many of the greatest artists of all time.

In this lavishly illustrated book, thirteen stunning reproductions of Old Master paintings are used to tell the story of New Testament miracles. Each painting is accompanied by an absorbing account of the story depicted, pertinent quotations from the Bible, and an easy-to-read schematic line drawing that explains what is happening in the scene. An illustrated time-line, a brief biography of each artist, and a comprehensive index also are provided.

Both engaging and informative, New Testament Miracles is a visually pleasureable retelling of miracle stories from the New Testament, including the healing of the leper, Jesus’ calming of the sea, and the multiplication of the loaves and fishes.

Presents brief retellings of the miracles of Jesus Christ, accompanied by paintings by eminent artists from the past and details about each work.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Part of the "Art Revelations" series, this large-format volume presents brief stories of 12 New Testament miracles illustrated by reproductions of Medieval and Renaissance paintings. Most of the miracles were performed by Jesus, while a few are associated with the apostles. Each miracle is introduced by a relevant biblical quote, followed by a paragraph of text providing more information about the event. The miracles are presented with one painting that is accompanied by a schematic outline identifying figures in the painting. Besides these large paintings, each presentation includes smaller reproductions of relevant art. A number of the details of these smaller items are labeled as details of the originals, but they are actually copies by modern illustrators. While the book is colorful and attractive, it is not a successful art history book because only a few sentences per page deal with questions of art. Also, the page layouts are chopped up and confusing, making it difficult to match captions to illustrations. The book might be enjoyable for browsing or as an incentive for learning more about art history or learning more about the New Testament. The book includes an index, introduction, chronology of miracles, and biographies of artists. 2004, Enchanted Lion Books, Ages 11 up.

School Library Journal
Gr 5-10-Two oversized, "Eyewitness"-style books. The 12 miracles discussed in the first title include Jesus healing the man born blind, Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, and the conversion of Paul. Each one is told from verses in the four Gospels or the Book of Acts, with explanatory paragraphs, sidebars, and captions by the author. Art masterpieces, usually one full page and two or three smaller ones, illustrate each story. Works by El Greco, Rembrandt, Tintoretto, and Witz, among others, are featured. The captions provide background on the artist and the significance of each painting or mosaic. A chronology of miracles, including references to the Bible chapters and verses, is included. The 18 women in the second title include Rachel, Leah, Ruth, and Bathsheba. A large painting, often full page, accompanies each story, and smaller reproductions give readers other artists' viewpoints. Bosch, Botticelli, and Poussin are among the painters whose work appears here. Both volumes include biographies of the artists. Visually stunning books.-Linda Beck, Indian Valley Public Library, Telford, PA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
