Overview

Palliative care is moving through an important period of expansion and development, spreading beyond its original hospice base to encompass care in the community, in hospitals, health centers, clinics and nursing homes. It can now be found in over 70 countries of the world. What challenges does this multidisciplinary specialty face as it seeks to combine high grade pain and symptom control with sensitive psychological, spiritual and social care? What are the implications of current constraints on health policy and planning? How do ethical issues about resource allocation and end of life care impinge? Can palliative care be further extended to include conditions other than cancer?

This book addresses these and many related issues in ways which will be readily accessible to students of health and social care as well as to those involved in purchasing or providing palliative care services, and to social scientists interested in chronic illness, death and dying. Its editors are respected experts in the field with backgrounds in the social sciences, nursing and medicine and the book's contributors include leading international figures from a wide range of palliative care and academic disciplines.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Lisa Stepp, PhD, RN, APN, AOCN, CRNH (Private Practice)
Description: This book is a detailed account of the state of hospice and palliative care to date. The text is divided into appropriate sections for the student and academician concerned with hospice trends.
Purpose: The purpose of this book, as defined by the editors, is to present issues in palliative care in an easily accessible manner. This objective is worthy since currently there are very few texts on palliative care that are appropriate for the classroom. The objectives are met by the contributors and editors.
Audience: The book is definitely designed to be used as a text for students in an academic setting. The contributors and editors are highly credible and well respected in the field of hospice and palliative care.
Features: The illustrations presented in this book are black and white. The graphs and tables are clear and need little further explanation. Overall the book is clear, concise, and easy to read.
Assessment: This book is very nicely presented with an integration of information regarding policy, ethics, and standards regarding palliative care. Of special interest is the incorporation of palliative care in Europe, Asia, and Sweden. This international perspective gives students of palliative care a picture of different ways to purchase and provide this service. This book has very limited information regarding clinical interventions or treatments but I would still suggest this book for purchase by educators, administrators, clinicians, and students.

Addresses issues facing the field, which is expanding beyond its original hospice base into community, hospital, clinical, and nursing-home settings and seeking to combine high-grade pain and symptom control with psychological, spiritual, and social care. The 18 studies consider policy, ethics and evidence from such perspectives as costs and resource allocation; service developments such as the evolution of the hospice approach and a Swedish model of home care; and clinical issues, among them therapeutic innovations and voluntary euthanasia in terminal illness. They also include reviews of current practice in Asia, eastern Europe, South Australia, and other regions. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
