More practical than research-based, it begins with a simple, eloquent definition: "Environmental pollution is the addition of any substance... or any form of energy... to the environment at a rate faster than it can be dispersed, diluted, decomposed, recycled, or stored in some harmless form." The author spends the rest of the volume expounding on types of pollution and how humans attempt to mitigate them (graphics of landfills, cyclone scrubbers, and sewage systems complement paragraphs of text explaining how technology tries to clean air, water, and land). ."
