Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
This is a revised version of the Coopers' 1997 book Virtual Field Trips, including 100 new Internet destinations (of the 440 total listed). Intended for grades K-12, the virtual experiences range from a tour of a submersible operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute to a visit to an Inter-Tribal Gallery of Native American art, a look at a Japanese A-bomb museum site, a site where James Joyce can be heard reading aloud from Finnegan's Wake, and a stroll around the sights of Paris. The sites are organized into chapters by topic (e.g., Animal Kingdom, Outer Space, Science and Industry), and each is annotated in a detailed paragraph. A good resource for extending classroom study. 2001, Libraries Unltd, 156p, index, 25cm, 00-045091, $27.50. Adult. Reviewer: Paula Rohrlick; March 2001 (Vol. 35 No. 2)
From The Critics
As the world wide web continues to grow, there is a continuing need for guide books like this. The mini-reviews of thematic web sites can make web browsing more productive, rather than accidental or aimless. Thirteen topical chapters span the web from virtual time machine (historical events) to aquatic life, to science and industry, to people you should know. Learning can be extended well beyond the classroom via the Internet by planning "trips" to museums, schools, libraries, universities, cities (both modern and ancient), and more. The authors have selected and reviewed a great collection of sites. Those with primary grade materials are so noted. As websites are subject to change, the publisher posts updates on their website (www.lu.com). 2001, Libraries Unlimited, Inc., $27.50. Ages Adult. Reviewer: M. Henebry SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8
School Library Journal
This annotated guide to 440 Web sites includes over 100 new to this edition that were selected to tie in to National Science Standards and inquiry-based learning, and to encourage independent studies. Organized into 13 topics covered in most K-12 school curricula, the entries include museums, libraries, schools, scientific labs, and government and university sites. The URLs have been selected for their interactive features; those recommended for primary students are marked with a symbol. Cross-references and a comprehensive index make it easy to locate sites to extend lesson resources beyond textbooks. The authors promise to post URL changes on the publisher's Web site to keep the addresses up-to-date. An accessible, useful resource that will add pizzazz to any lesson plan.-Sandra L. Doggett, Urbana High School, Ijamsville, MD Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Booknews
Describes some 440 exciting and innovative educational destinations for Internet field trips. K-12 students can hear the voices of survivors of the atomic bomb dropped on Japan, join a research biologist to study freshwater dolphins, and take a technical tour of the ozone hole. Profiles of Web sites are organized by curricular area and subjects applicable across the curriculum. Includes many sites that tie into National Science Standards, utilize inquiry-based learning, or encourage independent studies. This edition contains entries on 100 new Web sites. The Coopers are licensed clinical social workers. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
